How Information Technology can be

used to develop Bangladesh Agriculture

Abstract

Agriculture is a veritably important sector in Bangladesh. still development of this sector has been slow
and productivity and affair as not been over to standard as Bangladesh has shown immense eventuality
in the history. This exploration was carried out to find out whether IT can be used to develop Bangladesh
husbandry. Through this report I've looked at some of the problems that are facing Bangladesh
husbandry moment and whether IT can break those problems. I've also looked in to points that stand in
the way between IT and agrarian development. I've also concentrated on areas similar as the benefits
that growers can gain by embracing IT. still for my exploration to be meaningful I've taken into
consideration that it's possible to give agrarian areas with high speed internet. And also growers can
gain access to databases that contains necessary information about proper husbandry.

Introduction

Agriculture is one of Bangladesh’s most important sectors. It generates19.6 of public GDP and employs

63 of total working population. utmost pastoral areas are dependent substantially on agrarian for food

and income. still, indeed being of similar great significance, the sector is largely undermined.

3
IT can support policy- timber and evaluation on optimal ranch product, disaster operation,agro-

environmental resource operationetc., using tools similar as geographic information systems( Civilians).

It can be used to ameliorate ranch operation and husbandry technologies by effective ranch operation,

threat operation, effective information or knowledge transferetc., realizing competitive and sustainable

husbandry with safe products. For illustration, growers must make critical opinions similar as what to

and when to plant, and how to manage pests, while considering out- ranch factors similar as

environmental impacts, request access, and assiduity norms. IT- grounded decision support system( DSS)

can surely help their opinions. Secondly, IT can give systems and tools to secure food traceability and

trustability that has been an arising issue concerning ranch products since serious impurity similar as BSE

and funk flu was detected. Eventually, IT can take an important and crucial part for industrialization of

husbandry or ranch business enterprises, combining the below places.

Information technology( IT) doubtlessly contributes important to husbandry and pastoral development.

originally, it can grease pastoral conditioning and give more comfortable and safe pastoral life with

original services to those in the civic areas, similar as provision of distance education, tele- drug, remote

public services, remote entertainment etc. Secondly, IT can initiate new agrarian and pastoral business

similar ase-commerce, real estate business for satellite services, pastoral tourism, and virtual pot of

small- scale granges. Thirdly, it can support policy- timber and evaluation on optimal ranch product,

disaster operation,agro-environmental resource operationetc., using tools similar as geographic

information systems( Civilians). Fourthly, it can ameliorate ranch operation and husbandry technologies

by effective ranch operation, threat operation, effective information or knowledge transferetc., realizing

competitive and sustainable husbandry with safe products. Eventually, IT can take an important and

crucial part for industrialization of husbandry or ranch business enterprises, combining the below places.

4
Background
Agriculture is the single most important sector of Bangladesh’s frugality.

The dominant food crop of Bangladesh is rice. Rice product presently occupies about 70 percent of the
cultivated land, with Bangladesh producing17.7 million tons in 1996. Between rice growing seasons,
growers will do everything possible to help the land from lying free. They will grow vegetables, peanuts,
and oilseeds. Other crops are grown substantially for the domestic request. Some crops are grown
substantially for import. Tea is Bangladesh’s alternate loftiest agrarian import. In 1996, 50,000 tons were
packed out of the country. Jute is the main cash crop. It has strong filaments, which are generally made
into carpets, burlap bags, mats, and upholstery. In 1996, Bangladesh produced 980,000 tons of jute,
which was one- fourth of the world’s force.

In the environment of husbandry, the eventuality of information technology( IT) can be assessed
astronomically under two heads( a) as a tool for direct donation to agrarian productivity and( b) as an
circular tool for empowering growers to take informed and quality opinions which will have positive
impact on the way husbandry and confederated conditioning are conducted.

The broad information inputs needed by growers in the new script can be classified as( i) mindfulness
Databases those that grease proper understanding of the counteraccusations of the WTO on husbandry,
( ii) Decision Support Systems- information that facilitates growers to make a proper geek analysis to
take applicable opinions,( iii) systems that grease Indian growers to forge applicable alliances for
collaborative benefit,( iv) information on new openings( iv) monitoring systems for corrective measures.

IT is playing an important and vital part in agrarian product and marketing. IT allows growers to save
time on order and delivery and getting feedback. In the being competition, there's a need to fleetly
attract new guests as well as retain being guests. In order to take the real status of agrarian product and
marketing, there's an critical need to develop the following particulars

1. Farmers ’ crop database must be managed. The database includes the kinds of crops, the size of
cultivated area, time of crop and yield. growers or the extension labor force transmit those data via the
Internet to database garçon. Further, information provides the planter with an important instrument for
decision timber and taking action.

2. Crops information service system should be created. This system analyzes the crop data to produce
some statistical tables. growers can pierce these statistical data by browsing the homepage and make
their product plan. Changes within the structure of husbandry will presumably have an impact on

the selection and types of accession of software and other intertwined systems made by the growers.

5
3. product ways and information inquiry system should be created. This system integrates the product
ways and information, which are developed by experimental agrarian institutes and agrarian
enhancement stations. growers can find out applicable product information through this inquiry service
system.

4. product outfit’s inquiry service system should be created. This system gathers information from the
companies of seeds and crop product outfit to make the product outfit’s inquiry service system. At the
same time, allow applicable companies to pierce this system and enter their

own data. thus, growers can order the demanded particulars through this system.

3 objects of the current design study

Main objective

The main ideal of the present design study is to assess the impact of ICT uses in agrarian sector in
Bangladesh.

Specific objects of the design study

The following specific objects will be useful for the proposed exploration design

• To assess at which position ICT is presently known in different sectors of Kishoreganj quarter

• To estimate at which position ICT is being used in husbandry

• To assess the current position of adequacy of ICT in husbandry conditioning

6
• To review the position of pretensions meeting from on- going ICTs uses

• To assess the difference ahead and after the current use of ICT.

Research Question
Through this research I will try to establish a positive relation between agriculture and information

technology (IT); how IT can be used and the benefits that can be attained for agriculture.

General Research Questions:

1. How does ICT performance to the agribusiness development?

2. How do agribusiness mates use ICT in their diurnal business conditioning?

Specific Research Questions:

 How is farming done today?

 What are the main problems faced by farmers in relate to farming?

 What can IT provide to solve farming problems and how?

 What are the possible benefits that can be gained by using IT in agriculture?

 To what extent can IT help farmers?

7
Hypothesis

Two most important factors of IT are Internet and a database that consists of the data that can be
penetrated. So in my exploration I'm assuming that the agrarian areas have high speed internet that can
support videotape conference and has exceptional download pets.

I'm also assuming that the necessary database is also available and accessible for the growers.

Methodology

For my primary exploration, I'll conduct a check of a aimlessly named

sample from the general population to get their perception on
husbandry and the preface of IT in it. To do this I'll develop a
questionnaire with a range of questions to get a useful set of data that
will help me answer my exploration questions.

For my secondary exploration I'll use the web( Google, Yahoo, Mozilla),
magazines, journals, journals, government publications and analogous
exploration reports.

Data presentation and Analysis

Check PROFILE

The total sample size for the conducted check was 20. The sample was asked to fill out precisely made
questionnaires that were developed to answer the exploration questions.

1 What do you suppose is the current condition of the agrarian sector of Bangladesh?

Excellent; we're really doing well

OK; we're producing enough for ourselves and are exporting as well

Moderate; nothing fancy but we're ok

8
Not well; we could use some aid

Doubtful; we hardly have well for ourselves

Intention For my first question I wanted to find out what the general public learning was the current
condition of husbandry in our country.

Result From my check I discovered that a half the sample allowed

that the condition of husbandry in Bangladesh was in a moderate state. Not important nor less

Figure 1

2 Do you suppose the agrarian sector in Bangladesh needs any development?

Absolutely; it's a vital part of our frugality

yea; our country depends largely on it

No; it's going on enough fine

Absolutely not; there’s more important goods that needs development

Intention This question was asked to find out if people knew how important husbandry is to
Bangladesh.

Result Through my check I discovered that a maturity believes that Bangladesh agriculture lacks some

attributes and needs some development.

9
3 What do you suppose is the main problem with husbandry moment in Bangladesh?

growers warrant the knowledge and skill demanded to cultivate.

indecorous husbandry styles

Inefficient technology

Other,

Intention This question was asked to find out how informed the general public was about husbandry.

Result This question indicated that the major problems with husbandry moment are lack of knowledge
by growers and hamstrung technology.

10
4 Do you agree that Information Technology can be used in husbandry?

Agree

Differ

Intention By this question I tried to find out how numerous people allowed

it's possible to link husbandry with Information Technology.

Result This question revealed that everyone believed that it was possible to link IT and husbandry.

11
5 Do you suppose growers can gain precious knowledge from Information Technology?

Yes

No

perhaps

Intention This question was asked to find out whether the general public study IT could give any useful
information.

Result The check showed that 65 of the sample believed that IT could give precious information to

growers.

12
6 Do you suppose information gained from the IT can be put into practical use by growers?

Yes

No

perhaps

Intention This question was asked to find out that indeed if IT could be linked with and give useful
information to planter, can they be put into practical use.

Result The check showed a land slide result. 75 believed that information attained can veritably much
be put into practical use.

13
7 What type of knowledge would growers be willing to gain from Information Technology?

Pest control

Harvesting ways

Weather updates

Soil information

Others( please specify),

Intention This question was asked to find out what type of information was most wanted by growers

Result Through my check I set up out that harvesting ways and pest control styles were most wanted by
growers. From this we can also come to a decision that these two are the major problems faced by
growers.

8 Do you suppose advance warnings about natural disasters similar as flood tide or draught can help
growers prepare?

Yes

No

perhaps

Intention This question was asked to find out to what situations IT can be useful in husbandry.

14
Result The check showed that 95 believed that IT could also help growers during natural disasters. This
showed that the utility of IT wasn't confined to a given range or limit.

9 Do you suppose the growers would believe all the information they get from IT?

explosively believe; they will have eyeless faith on it

Believe; as long as it does n’t contradict with their being knowledge

Won't believe; they would simply choose not to apply

Absolutely not; it would fully contradict with their former knowledge

Intention This question was asked to find out how important faith the growers would have on the
information gained from IT.

Result From the check it was set up out that utmost believed that growers would have faith in the
information they entered as long as it doesn't put their being knowledge on contrary direction. This

15
would mean if the growers would rather believe wrong system that a correct one if it doesn't match

with their current knowledge.

10 If the answer to 9 is explosively believe/ Believe, do you suppose growers would actually apply the
ways and knowledge they learn from IT?

Yes

No

perhaps

Intention This question is related to the former bone

. This question was asked to find out if the growers did believe the information they get would they
actually put it into use.

Result The check showed that ¾ of the sample allowed

that planter would apply the knowledge they learnt from IT.

16
11: Do you think IT can change the face of agriculture in Bangladesh?

 Yes

 No

 Maybe

Intention: This question was asked to find out whether the general public thought IT was the solution to

the problems in agriculture.

Result: The survey showed 70% believed IT really could change agriculture. This means people actually

believed IT was the answer to the agricultural problems of Bangladesh.

17
Summery of Research Findings

Through my research I was able to find out that the general public did think that it was possible to use

Information Technology to develop the agricultural sector of Bangladesh.100% of the sample surveyed

responded that it was possible to use IT in agriculture.

There are areas where IT can provide valuable information that can change the face of Bangladesh

agriculture.48% of the sample thought that farmers lackon sils and nowlege was the main problem in

agriculture while 43% believed that inefficient technology was the main problem. 70% of the sample

thought that IT could help develop Bangladesh agriculture

How ever a problem lies in persuading farmers about the benefits of IT. 85% of the sample thought

farmers would accept the the information recived from IT give the new ideas did not contradict with the

old ones. For example IT can give out useful ideas about farming that could result in positive results. But

18
the farmers may not chose to accept the new ideas because they might be quiet different from what

they knew from before. This could be a major challenge in properly fusing IT with agriculture

Recommendation

To successfully use Information Technology in agriculture much worr is needed to be done to set up IT in

rural areas. And for this the gevernment should take more initiatives to and involvement in this matter.

The government can provide more funding to set up IT. The government can also tae steps to educate

farmers to an extent where the farmers can understand what IT is, what information the IT is giving and

encode the information in ways that can be useful.

Another recommendation would be to set up work shops that could demonstrate the possible

utiization of the information attained and the benefits gained from IT. This could help to persuade the

farmers to change their old methods and accept the new and more productive methods.

19
Conclusion

It can be rightly stated that though Information Technology in the agriculture is in growing stage in the

Bangladeshi context. It has just started to spread its shoots, but with its immense potential to

standardize and regulate the agricultural processes and solve the problems, it is sure that IT will be one

of the most important areas in the near future for agricultural development.

It is hoped that Information Technology will bring a highly developed agriculture by its worthwhile

contributions to the society by narrowing down the enormous gap between the researchers and

farmers. It is suggested that the farmers are to be made aware of the utility of the Internet and other

related information regarding Information Technology.
