This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
After going through this self-learning module, it is expected that you will be
able to:
1. explain how the action of wind, water and sun contribute to rock
weathering;
2. compile pictures of weathered rocks caused by wind, water and sun;
and
3. support local tourism by promoting the rock formations in your
place.

RECAP
LESSON
You have learned so much about the breaking down of rocks and the
agents of weathering from the previous module. In addition to your learnings,
you are going to have a deeper understanding today on how these agents affect
the weathering of rock. In this module, you are going to concentrate on the
three (3) natural forces that contribute to the weathering of rocks namely the
water, wind and sun.
Water
In most cases, water, either liquid or solid form, is the cause of
weathering of rocks. Rainwater can easily enter cracks in rocks or sidewalks.
If this happens during cold months, the water may freeze and expand in the
crack. Working as a wedge, the ice splits the rock. When ice melts, liquid
water performs the act of erosion by carrying away the tiny rock fragments
lost in the split. Sometimes you can observe shattered and sharp rocks in the
rivers and seas. But there are also times where rocks are smooth and spheroid
in shape. All of these are the result of the collision of rocks and bumping to
each other due to force exerted by the current of water.

Wind
Wind is a powerful force that can also cause weathering. Over long
periods of time, wind can wear away rock and carry tiny pieces of the rock to
new places. It plays a major role
part in shaping and reshaping the
Earth’s surface. This is can create
amazing landscapes, such as rocks
that look like mushrooms. This
usually happens in an open area
where the winds could freely blow.
Sometimes, the force of the wind is
strong especially if there is a storm.
The materials carried away by winds
can hit the rock particularly in
mountains that may lead to the
breaking of rock with the help of Figure 3: Rock formation in North America caused by wind and
another agent of weathering. water.
Sun
The sun also contributes to
the weathering of rock through its
heat energy that is being absorb by
the rock. The cooling and heating
of the surface of the rock affect its
hardness particularly in high
places where it is cold during night
time and hot during day time.
Rocks that are exposed to this
temperature usually weakens and
increases the chance of breaking
easily if contacted with other Figure 4: Weathering of a rocky mountain caused by sun.
agents of weathering.
Combining these three agents of weathering forms a powerful force that
could tear and pulverize the rocks in a particular place. But always take note
that the weathering process does not occur in just a day or two. Regular
exposure of rocks for a long time to these agents lead to the destruction of
rocks and sometimes creating a unique rock formation. The end result of
weathering is always the production of nutrient-rich soil that is capable for
the growing of plants and trees.
ACTIVITIES
__________1. Wind cannot break the rock due to its hardness attribute.
__________3. When the rock is expose to the heat of the sun, its surface
becomes brittle.
__________4. The wind contributes in the shaping and reshaping of the earth’s
surface.
__________5. If the water, wind and sun are combined, it becomes easy for the
ACTIVITY 2: My Gallery!
Directions: Create your own gallery of pictures showing the rock formation
in any part of the world. Collect five pictures for each agent (water, wind and
sun) from old magazines, newspapers or brochures and paste them in a
separate short bond paper. You may ask assistance from elderly in doing this
activity.
You may refer to the table below for the criteria of grading your output.
