Nativization Model

Nativization is the process by which a second language becomes the native language of children through acquisition from parents. It results in assimilation and an internalized view of the language system. Denativization is the opposite process, where the learner adjusts their internal system to fit the external norms of the language through inferencing strategies. Both nativization and denativization are aspects of the overall language acquisition process.

NATIVIZATION MODEL

 Nativizaton

 Denativization

NATIVIZATION

 It is the process whereby a language gains native speakers.

 It happens when a second language used by adults (parents) becomes native language of their
children.

 characterized by assimilation

 learners make input conform to his own internalized viewof what constitute the L2 system

 learner attends to an “internal norm”

 evident in pidginization, as well as early second and firstlanguage acquisition

PIDGIN

 Simplified language that develops as a means of communication between two or more groups that
do not have a language in common.
 It is most commonly employed in situations such as trade, or where both groups speak languages
different from the language of the country in which they reside.

CREOLE

 A stable natural language developed from the mixing of parent languages in that they have been
nativized by children as their primary language.Making them have features of natural languages
that are normally missing from pidgins.

DENATIVIZATION

 involves accommodation
 the learner adjusts his internalized system to make it fit with the input
 learner uses inferencing strategies to reshape his interlanguage according to an“external norm”
 part of depidginization, also late second and first language acquisition

DEPIDGINIZATION
 It’s a process when a pidgin becomes the native speech of a community, it is depidginized into a
Creole.

“SLA is the gradual transition of attention from an internal and external norm…the switch that learners
make from reliance on simplifying to reliance on inferencing strategies”- Roger Andersen

Nativization and Denativization are not two separate ‘forces’ but aspects of the same overall process
of acquisition.
