Carbuyproject
Use the checklist/rubric on the next page to make sure you have completed each step
below.
l. Once you determine which cars you want to buy, you will research the price and
options available for those cars. Fill out the appropriate information on
worksheet #1 in lines l, 2 and 3 for each car. You should choose atleast2
different options that cost extra.
2. Calculate lines 4, 5 and 6 on worksheet #1 for each car.
3. Once you have calculated the total cost with tax for each car, you will need to
calculate the financing/leasing costs using the chart on the Financing Costs
worksheet for each car you want to purchase.
4. Use the price per year calculated (from the Financing Costs worksheets) for each
car and fill out the information on worksheet #1 in line 7 under the appropriate
column for each car.
5. Next step is to calculate the maintenance costs (see routine maintenance costs
worksheet), registration costs (see registration costs worksheet) and fuel costs
(see fuel costs worksheet). Then fill out the appropriate information on
worksheet #1 in lines 8, 9 and 10.
6. Now, calculate the total cost to purchase each car per year (Grand Total row on
worksheet #1) and fill in your answer on line 11 on worksheet #1.
7. Decide which of the three cars you researched is the car you would buy. Write a
few sentences explaining which car you would buy and your reasons. Write the
answer on the bottom of this page.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE COSTS
Maintenance costs for new cars are approximately $100 per year. This charge includes oil/filter
changes, lubrication, and adjustments. However, as cars become older maintenance costs increase.
If maintenance costs increase by 150% for each year beyond the first year in service, determine
the maintenance cost for each year in the chart below. Show yoar work below the chart. Follow
the example I have shownfor year 2.

FUEL COSTS
You have to include the cost of fuel for your car as part of the overall expense or operating costs.
First, research to find each of your cars average mpg (use city mpg). Print out the page showing
this information and circle the average mpg you are using.

REGISTRATION COSTS
Assume the registration fee for a new car costs $50 for each $2500 the car costs. So, for example,
if a new vehicle costs $25,000 the registration fee is $500 and calculated as follows:
:
25,000 _ ,,
t0, so l0 x 50: $500
2500
