DLD Assignment PDF

This document provides information about digital logic design including integrated circuit categories based on complexity and gate count, logic families and their characteristics, the difference between fan-in and fan-out, and verifying the functioning of common logic gates including the 7408 AND gate, 7432 OR gate, and 7404 NOT gate. It also notes that 7400 series ICs are based on TTL logic, commercial grade ICs use a 54 prefix, and military grade uses a 74 prefix.

Digital Logic Designing

NAME = MUHAMMAD ALI

DEPARTMENT = COMPUTER SCIENCE

SEMESTER = 2nd

INSTRUCTOR= Mr. Abid Hussain

CMS ID = 391705
Pre-Lab Tasks: (5 marks)

1. Read the topic Integrated Circuits (2.9) from your course book and answer
the following questions:

Digital ICs can be categorized according to the complexity of their circuits

usually termed as scale integration. The following are the six major categories.
Give their full names and range of gates available in each of them.

SSI - Small scale integration (Up to 10 gates)

MSI – Medium scale Integration (More than 10 less than 100 gates)
LSI – Large scale integration (100 to 1000 gates)
VLSI – Very large scale integration (1000 to 10,000 gates)
ULSI – Ultra large scale integration (More than one million gates)
GSI – Giga scale integration (More than one Billion gates)

2. Another categorization is with respect to the Logic Families of Digital ICs.

The seven of these are listed below. Give their full name and give their utilization
in terms of speed, power etc. (e.g. Low Power, High Speed).

RTL – Resister Transistor Logic (High Power, Low Speed)

DTL – Diode Transistor Logic (Low Power, Speed than RTL)
ECL – Emitter Coupled Logic (High Power, Highest Speed)
TTL – Transistor Transistor Logic (Low Power, Speed than RTL and DTL)
CMOS – Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (Low Power, High Speed)

3. Differentiate b/w Fan In and Fan Out of an IC.

Fan in: The term Fan in defines the total number of inputs a single logic gate can accept.
A typical logic may have 1 or 2 inputs.

Fan Out: The Fan Out is defined as the max numbers of inputs that can be connected to
the output of a gate without degrading the normal operation.

4. Show the correct pin numbering and connection of gates inside these blank
chips with the help of their datasheets.
5. Mention the manufacturer whose datasheet you consulted.

The manufacturer whose datasheet helped me in correcting the above chips in

numbering and connection of gates was the datasheet of(https://www.ti.com/)
Texas Instruments one of the best manufacturers in World.

Lab Task (5 Marks)

6. Verify the functioning of the following ICs:

7408 is a logic gate chip with four two-input AND gates. Each of the four AND
gates are independent. Each gate has one output, two inputs and three pins. The
AND gates carry out Logic AND operations.

7432 A logic gate that consists of four OR gates. The OR gate performs logical
OR operation. The OR gates come in form of DIP package ICs. Each gate has three
terminals two inputs and one output. The ICs are made by CMOS, TTL technology.

7404 It consists of six NOT gates. We know that the NOT gate also called
inverters because of it does the complements of the input. When we apply 0 or low
signal to the input it gives 1 or high signal in output.

Fill in the blanks

1. The ICs in 7400 series are based on Transistor Transistor Logic (TTL) logic
family?
2. The commercial grade IC is denoted by 54 prefix.
3. The military grade IC is denoted by 74 prefix.
