1. INTRODUCTION
Ramco Cements was established as Madras Cements in 1961 by Shri. P.A.C. Ramasamy
Raja, an industrialist and the founder of Ramco Group of Companies. The first plant
commenced operation at Ramasamy Raja Nagar Plant, Virudhu Nagar, Tamil Nadu. They are
the first to adopt dry process kiln technology and vertical roller mills which help in energy
efficiency. Ramco Cement is now 5th position in India and 2nd position in South India for
manufacturing and market share.
2. OBJECTIVES OF VISIT

3. COMPANY PROFILE
The Ramco cements Ltd. (Formerly Madras Cements Ltd.) is India’s leading cement
company offering “Right Product for Right Application” through innovative cement and
cement products. Ramco Cements Ltd. is a company of the Ramco Group, a business group
based in Chennai, India. The company also produces ready-mix concrete and dry mortar
products and operates wind farms. The Ramco Cements Ltd. commissioned its first cement
plant in 1961 with a capacity of 200 TPD (Tonnes Per Day) and since then has increased the
number of cement plants to 11 (five integrated plants and six grinding units) and cumulative
cement production capacity to over 20 MTPA (Million Tonnes per annum). One packing plant
with a capacity of 120 tonnes per hour. The main product of the company is Portland cement,
manufactured in 8 production facilities that include Integrated Cement plants and Grinding
units with a current total production capacity of 16.45 MTPA (out of which satellite grinding
units capacity alone is 4 MTPA). It manufactures and markets Portland cement, blast furnace
slag cement, white cement, and Pozzolana cement. Ramco Cement is now 5th position in India
and 2nd position in South India for manufacturing and market share.
4. COMPANY STRUCTURE
The Ramco Cements earlier known as Madras Cements (MCL) was established in 1957, a
part of Ramco Group, a well-known business group of South India. It is based at Chennai. The
company is the fifth largest cement producer in the country. Ramco Supergrade is the most
popular cement brand in South India. It is headquartered at Chennai. The main product of the
company is Portland cement, manufactured in eight state–of–the art production facilities that
includes Integrated Cement plants and Grinding units with a current total production capacity
of 15.5 MTPA.
The first plant of MCL at Ramasamy Raja Nagar, near Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu
commenced its production in 1962 with a capacity of 200 tonnes, using wet process. In 70’s,
the plant switched over to more efficient dry process. A second kiln was also added to bring
the total capacity to 12 lakh ton per annum. The second venture of MCL is its Jayanthipuram
plant near Vijayawada in A.P set up in 1987. The 16-lakh ton per annum plant employs the
latest state of art technology.

In the year 1999, MCL commissioned the most sophisticated Ready Mix Concrete Plant in
Medavakkam in South Chennai. In 2002, a state–of–art Dry Mortar plant was commissioned
near Sriperumpudur, Tamilnadu which manufactures dry mortar, cement-based putty and tile
fix compound. In 2000, MCL acquired Gokul Cements situated in Mathod in Karnataka whose
capacity is 600 TPD. Being an eco–friendly company, MCL set up the Ramco Winfarm in
1993 at Muppandal TN. This was followed by wind farms in Poolavadi near Coimbatore in
1995 and Oothumalai in 2005. The combined capacity of these two put together is about 45
MW.
The third venture of MCL is at Alathiyur in TN set up in 1997 and expanded by addition of
another line in 2001. The 30 lakh tonnes per annum plant is the most modern plant in the
country.
Today the company is the sixth largest producer of cement in India. It is also one of the largest
wind energy producers in the country with a capacity of 185.59 MW.
The main product of the company is Portland Cement manufactured through the five advanced
production facilities spread over South India. The cement capacity is 10.49 million tons per
annum.
The company also produces Ready Mix Concrete and Dry Mortar products. In addition, the
company also operates one of the largest wind farms in the country.

A. The Ramasamy Raja Nagar unit of Ramco Cements was conferred the Innovative Project
Award for “Transportation of Waste Heat Recovery Steam to CPP Turbine” at the 21st
National Award for Excellence in Energy Management 2020, conducted by the
Confederation of Indian Industry.
B. The Alathiyur unit of Ramco Cements was awarded “Greentech Environment Award
2020” for its outstanding achievement in Green Belt Development, by Greentech
Foundation, New Delhi. The award was presented by Mr. Kamaleshwar Sharan,
Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Greentech Foundation and Mr. S.D. Maske,
Former Executive Director, ONGC Limited and Senior Advisor - New Ventures, Cairn
Oil & Gas Vedanta Limited.
C. The Ariyalur unit of Ramco Cements was conferred the “Special Award” for Green Belt
Development of Community Initiatives by the Confederation of Indian Industry in
Chennai. The award was presented by Mr. Prasanna Kumar – Vice President of Toyota
Kirloskar Auto Parts Limited.
D.The Ariyalur unit of Ramco Cements was awarded "5 Stars" in the Southern Region
category of Environment, Health & Safety Excellence Awards 2020 by the Confederation
of Indian Industry. The award was presented by Mr.R. Shankar Head – Quality, Safety,
Sustainability Systems & Process Improvements of Sterling & Wilson Limited.
E. The Ramasamy Raja Nagar unit of Ramco Cements bagged first and third prizes from the
Madurai Productivity Council, for its involvement in continual improvement and new
creation. The award was presented by Mr.A.R. Sethupathy, President, Madurai
Productivity Council.
F. The Alathiyur unit of Ramco Cements was awarded "5 Stars" Rating in Environment,
Health & Safety Excellence Award 2020 by the Confederation of Indian Industry,
Chennai, during the 13th Edition Award Ceremony. The award was presented by Mr.
Saravanan Ramalingam, Head – EHS, Tata Electronics Limited, Award Committee
Member, CII.
G.The Ariyalur unit of Ramco Cements was conferred the Occupational Health & Safety
Award 2020 by Apex India Foundation in recognition of its excemplary performance in
Occupational Health & Safety. The Award was presented by Retd. Major General
Mr.P.K. Saighal, Defence Expert and TEDx Speaker, Government of India and Dr.R.K.
Suri, Chief Advisor, Apex India Foundation and Former Director of Ministry of
Environment and Forests.

H. The Alathiyur plant of Ramco Cements was recognized with the Golden Peacock
National Training Award for the year 2020 by The Institute of Directors, in New Delhi.
I. The Ramasamy Raja unit of Ramco Cements received the prestigious Gold Medal at the
National Awards for Manufacturing Competitiveness 2020 organized by International
Research Institute for Manufacturing. The unit also received “Special Award for
Sustainability in Operations” at All India Level, for demonstrating commitment and
excellence in the journey towards improving manufacturing competitiveness.
J. The Ramasamy Raja Nagar unit of Ramco Cements received the “5 Star Award” for its
performance in maintaining Occupational, Health, Safety and Environment standards
from the Confederation of Indian Industry.
10. OBSERVATIONS
i. The Ramco brand recall is synonymous with quality, and strive to service their
customers with durable and innovative cement products across Ordinary Portland
Cements and Blended Cements.
ii. Being a cement manufacturer, they are acutely aware of the impact of their operations
on the environment and the communities that operate in. Their organization is
committed to making continued investments in research and processes that contribute
towards better and environment-friendly cement production practices. Under the
purview of their sustainability initiatives, they also focus on engaging their customers,
employees and supply chain intermediaries as their sustainability initiative partners.
iii. Their leaders have always actively advocated corporate citizenship through several
focused initiatives to give back to society. They are committed to generate inclusive
value for the communities they are associated with, achieving excellence and growing
