DLP Math 8.5

The document outlines a detailed lesson plan on mathematical systems for 8th grade mathematics that defines the four components of a mathematical system as undefined terms, defined terms, axioms/postulates, and theorems. The lesson plan includes objectives, subject matter, learning activities such as preparatory activities, developmental activities, generalization, and evaluation to help students understand and illustrate the relationship between the four parts of a mathematical system.

January 31, 2023

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
1. Define each part of the mathematical system;
a. Undefined terms
b. Defined terms
c. Postulates
d. Theorems;
2. Illustrate how the four parts of mathematical system related to one
another.
II. Subject Matter
` Topic: “Describing Mathematical System”

TG: Teacher’s Guide for Junior High School
Materials: Visual aids, calculator, laptop and LED Television
Value Focus: Cooperation
PPST: Domain 4 – Curriculum and Planning
Time Frame: 1 hour

III. Learning Activities

A. Preparatory Activities

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Review

In order to refresh your memory from our past

lesson, answer the following questions.

Directions: Complete the table below by listing

some situations on how each type of reasoning
is used in different subjects.

(Students share their own reasonings.)

Questions:
Inductive Reasoning Sir.
1. It is a form of reasoning that uses specific
examples to arrive at a general rule,
30, because it is a multiple of 6 Sir.
generalizations, or conclusion.
2. What is the next term in the sequence 6,
12, 18, 24, …?
Inductive Reasoning Sir.
3. What type of reasoning draws a
conclusion based on collective
experiences?

Very good!

4. Motivation

I will be stating characteristics and you will try to

guess if it is a deductive or inductive reasoning.
There is bell here in front, the first person to
press the bell and answer the question correctly
will have additional points. Inductive Reasoning
Inductive Reasoning
1. Uses patterns, trends or observations. Deductive Reasoning
2. Is judging by experience Inductive Reasoning
3. From general to specific Deductive Reasoning
4. From specific to general
5. Uses facts or general principle

Very good! Thank you for answering.

This kind of shape Sir.

B. Developmental Activity

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

1. Presentation

We first define what is a mathematical system.

Mathematical System is divided into four (4)

parts:
 Undefined Terms
 Defined Terms
 Axioms/ Postulates
 Theorems

What are the 4 parts of a mathematical system?

 Undefined Terms
 Defined Terms
 Axioms/ Postulates
Good.  Theorems
Here are the learning objectives that you
will attain after our discussion.

Please read the objectives:

At the end of the lesson the we will be

able to:
1. Define each part of the
mathematical system;
a. Undefined terms
b. Defined terms
c. Postulates
d. Theorems;
2. Illustrate how the four parts of
mathematical system related to
2. Discussion one another.

Under undefined terms; in geometry, we come

across with terms which cannot be precisely
defined. In modern mathematics. We do accept
certain undefined terms by description. This
implies that?

Not all terms can be defined or have

exact definition of terms and accepted
Unlike undefined terms (which do not have in all branches of mathematics.
formal definition), defined terms have a formal
definition. They are used to define even more
terms.

Where can you find these definitions?

We can find it on our textbooks,

You are right. dictionaries and even on the internet.

A statement which is accepted as true without

proof are called axioms or postulates. These
statements can be used as reasons in proving
some mathematical statements.

While a theorem is a statement that can be

proven. Once a theorem is proven, it can also
be used as a reason in proving other
statements.

Undefined terms have 3 parts:

 Point
 Line
 Plane

For undefined terms:

 Collinear Points
 Coplaner Points
 Subsets of a line

Axioms consist of:

 6 postulates of a point, line and plane

Theorems have 3 theorems for point line and

plane

The 4 parts of a mathematical system can be

related to each other.

Example:
Undefined Defined Axioms Theorems
Line Line Two points The shortest
segment determine a segment from
line a point not on
a line to the
line is the
perpendicular
segment.

For this lesson, we will only focus on the

undefined terms.

Categorized these pictures in its point, line and

plane.

Very good. Now let’s talk about a point.

A point is a position in space. It has only

location but no dimension; length, width,
thickness and does not occupy an area.

It is named using a CAPITAL LETTER and it

can be modeled by a dot. What does it look
like?
Right. A dot is a best representation of a point.
Triangle, Square and Pentagon Sir.
And always remember that all other geometric
figures are made up of a collection of points.
Can you name at least 3 geometrics figures?

While a line is a straight, continuous

arrangement of infinitely many points. Its length
is infinite. It extends infinitely in two directions.
And it has no thickness. Now, draw a line.

Very good. The arrowhead symbolizes infinity.

Lines are named by a single lower case script

letter or by any two points on a line (two
CAPITAL LETTERS). It looks like these:
d
line d or d

or

line AB or line BA

or AB or BA

Remember that two points determine a line.

Plane is a flat surface that extends along its

length and width. It is like an “infinite sheet of
paper”.

Now you draw a plane.

Very good!

It is named by a single script CAPITAL LETTER

or by any three points in the plane which are not
on the same line.
Example:

or plane D

or any three points:

plane LIF
plane IFE

plane LEF
plane EFI

any more?

Good. Remember that at least noncollinear

points determine a plane.

3. Generalization We learn about the mathematical

system.
To sum up our lesson for today, what have you
learned from our discussion? There are 4 components of
mathematical system:
Very good. Who can give other realization?  Undefined Terms
 Defined Terms
 Axioms/ Postulates
 Theorems

None Sir.
Do you have questions and clarifications
regarding to our topic?

If there’s none, prepare for a quiz.

IV. Evaluation

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

Directions: Identify whether each pf the

following represents a point, line or a plane.

1. Stars in the sky 1. Point

2. Curtain rod 2. Line
3. Edge of a ruler 3. Line
4. Cartolina 4. Plane
5. A knot on a piece of thread 5. Point
6. A clothesline 6. Line
7. Top of a box 7. Plane
8. Page of a book 8. Plane
9. A magic wand 9. Line
10. Button 10. Point
11. Mole 11. Point
12. Handkerchief 12. Plane

V. Assignment
