Sustainable
architecture
Sustainable architecture is architecture that
seeks to minimize the negative environmental
impact of buildings through improved
efficiency and moderation in the use of
materials, energy, development space and the
ecosystem at large. Sustainable architecture
uses a conscious approach to energy and
ecological conservation in the design of the
built environment.
Main pillars of Sustainability:
—Eco Districts:
An Eco district or eco-district (from "ecological" and "district") is a
neighborhood, urban area, or region whose urban planning aims to integrate
objectives of sustainable development and social equity, and to reduce the
district's ecological footprint. The notion of an "Eco district" insists on the
consideration of all environmental issues, via a collaborative process
Designing a successful eco-district requires careful
consideration of a range of factors. Here are some
key considerations:
1. Location: The location of an eco-district is critical, as it can impact access to public transportation, resources,
and the local environment. It is important to consider access to green spaces, water resources, and public
transportation, as well as the proximity to employment centers.
2. Energy Efficiency: The buildings in an eco-district should be designed to be energy-efficient, using features
such as insulation, passive solar design, and energy-efficient lighting and appliances. Renewable energy
sources such as solar, wind, or geothermal should be incorporated to provide power to the buildings.
3. Sustainable Materials: Sustainable materials should be used in the construction of buildings in the eco-
district, such as recycled or locally sourced materials. Building materials should also be designed for
durability and to minimize waste during construction.
4. Water Conservation: Water conservation is an important consideration in an eco-district. Low-flow fixtures
should be used in all buildings, and rainwater harvesting systems can be implemented to capture and reuse
rainwater.
5. Transportation: Sustainable transportation options should be provided in an eco-district, such as bike lanes,
public transportation, and car-sharing programs. This can help reduce the reliance on individual vehicles and
promote alternative modes of transportation.
6. Community Engagement: Community engagement is crucial to the success of an eco-district. Residents
should be involved in the planning and design process, and education and outreach programs can be
implemented to promote sustainable behaviors and practices.
7. Economic Viability: An eco-district must be economically viable to be successful in the long term. The project
should be designed with a clear business plan that outlines the costs and benefits of the project and
identifies potential sources of funding.
