Articles

An article is a word that comes before a noun to show if it is general or specific.

It can be:

• ‘a’ (before a consonant sound) → a dog, a tree, a person


• ‘an’ (before a vowel sound) → an egg, an easy question
• ‘the’ → the question in the test, the roll call classroom

Indefinite - ‘a’ and ‘an’

You use ‘a’ and ‘an’ when you are talking about something not specific.

E.g. I saw a cat. I ate an apple. → You could be talking about any cat or apple!

Activity 1: Fill in the gap with ‘a’ or ‘an’.

Example: She drives an old car.

Definite - ‘the’

You use ‘the’ when you are talking about something specific.

E.g. I helped the boy sitting next to me. → You are talking about a specific person!

Example: I like to go to the Opera House in the city. The Opera House is in Sydney.
