DEFINITION OF NARRATIVE TEXT

A news item is a text which informs readers about events


of the day. The events are considered newsworthy or
important. It means if there is an important event that
should be known by many people.

THE PURPOSE

News item text aims to provide information to readers about an


important event or event of value. In addition, with news item
text, people can determine their attitude as a response to the
news.

GENERIC STRUCTURES
1. Main events
The main newsworthy event. In the first paragraph, there will be a
newsworthy event where this paragraph introduces the background of
how something happened and where it started.
This paragraph is more like an introduction.

2. Elaboration
After getting a glimpse of the newsworthy event, the reader will be taken
into several situations that are usually supporting ideas for the main
event. This supporting idea is packaged in the paragraph after the
newsworthy event, commonly known as elaboration. Elaboration itself
can also be the cause of the main events. This is where the explanation of
the main events is discussed including the time, actors, events, etc.

GENERIC STRUCTURES

3. Source
In this last stage, a learner will see the characteristic of news
item text. Since this type of text is a news text, a valid news
source is essential so it is necessary to have sources listed
either in the form of experts, experts' notes, or research
conducted by experts.

CHARACTERISTICS OF NEW ITEM TEXT

·The characteristics of news item text are as follows:


·The text focuses on an important event or incident
·The language used is short but concise
·It is sometimes preceded by the name of the city or the
name of the publishing media. For example, Jakarta - ....
·Usually accompanied by an image/illustration and a
headline that describes the gist of the event
