Assignment PMRP

1. The engineer provides a 98% confidence interval for the true mean cost of repairing cars in a head-on collision based on a sample of 24 cars with an average repair cost of $11,000 and standard deviation of $2,500. 2. A researcher claims the mean weight of men is greater than 100kg. A sample of 30 men has average weight 112.5kg. Using a 95% confidence interval, test if there is evidence to support the claim. 3. Find the probability that the length of time between battery charges for a certain computer, which is normally distributed with a mean of 50 hours and standard deviation of 15 hours, will be between 50 and 70 hours.

1.

An automotive engineer wants to estimate the cost of repairing a car that experiences a 25
MPH head-on collision. He crashes 24 cars, and the average repair is $11,000. The
standard deviation of the 24-car sample is $2,500.
Provide a 98% confidence interval for the true mean cost of repair.

2. Suppose a researcher claims that the mean average weight of men is greater than 100kgs
with a standard deviation of 15kgs. 30 men are chosen with an average weight of 112.5
Kgs. Using hypothesis testing; check if there is enough evidence to support the
researcher's claim. The confidence interval is given as 95%.

3. For a certain type of computers, the length of time between charges of the battery is
normally distributed with a mean of 50 hours and a standard deviation of 15 hours. John
owns one of these computers and wants to know the probability that the length of time
will be between 50 and 70 hours.

4. A radar unit is used to measure speeds of cars on a motorway. The speeds are normally
distributed with a mean of 90 km/hr and a standard deviation of 10 km/hr. What is the
probability that a car picked at random is travelling at more than 100 km/hr?

5. Hospital records show that of patients suffering from a certain disease, 75% die of it.
What is the probability that of 6 randomly selected patients, 4 will recover?

6. A bag contains 4 red and 3 black balls. A second bag contains 2 red and 4 black balls.
One bag is selected at random. From the selected bag, one ball is drawn. Find the
probability that the ball drawn is red.

7. The average weight of a dumbbell in a gym is 90lbs. However, a physical trainer believes
that the average weight might be higher. A random sample of 5 dumbbells with an
average weight of 110lbs and a standard deviation of 18lbs. Using hypothesis testing
check if the physical trainer's claim can be supported for a 95% confidence level.

8. The average score on a test is 80 with a standard deviation of 10. With a new teaching
curriculum introduced it is believed that this score will change. On random testing, the
score of 38 students, the mean was found to be 88. With a 0.05 significance level, is there
any evidence to support this claim?

9. In a cafe, the customer arrives at a mean rate of 2 per min. Find the probability of arrival
of 5 customers in 1 minute using the Poisson distribution formula.
10. The average score of a class is 90. However, a teacher believes that the average score
might be lower. The scores of 6 students were randomly measured. The mean was 82
with a standard deviation of 18. With a 0.05 significance level use hypothesis testing to
check if this claim is true.

11. The population standard deviation is 7. Our sample size is 36.

What is the 95% margin of error for:

1) the population mean

2) the sample mean

12. Tickets numbered 1 to 20 are mixed up and then a ticket is drawn at random. What is the
probability that the ticket drawn has a number which is a multiple of 3 or 5?
13. A tree consists of hundreds of apples. 46 apples are randomly chosen. The mean and
standard deviation of this instance is found to be 86 and 6.2 respectively. Determine
whether the apples are big enough or not.
14. A (blindfolded) marksman finds that on the average he hits the target 4 times out of 5. If
he fires 4 shots, what is the probability of

(a) More than 2 hits?

(b) At least 3 miss?
