Assessment Weighting: 5 %
Assessment Due Date: Friday 4:30 PM 28/04/2023 (Week 9)

Assessment Quiz Date: 05/05/2023 (Week 10)

Duration: 90 minutes
Lecturer: Cornelis Kok

Semester: 1, 2023

This Assessment Covers the Following Learning Outcomes:

Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate an understanding of, and apply, the fundamentals of
statics, dynamics and mechanical energy concepts.
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate an understanding of the engineering properties of fluids
and apply the fundamentals of hydrostatics.

Time Taken: ____ hours ______ minutes

Student Name: __________________________________________

Student ID: _____________________________________________

Additional Assessment Comments:

1. Any candidate, who aids, attempts to aid, obtains aid or attempts to obtain aid from another candidate will be
disqualified and further dealt with under the institutional disciplinary procedures for cheating. This could result
in the offender’s expulsion from the institution. All work must be completed by the candidate.
2. This is an OPEN BOOK assessment.
3. All answers must be written in this book, in the ruled spaces available, or on extra sheets (including graph
paper).
4. Write your student ID and the question number on each extra page, including graph paper, and enclose it in
the book adjacent to the relevant question.
5. CROSS OUT any work that you do not wish to have marked.
6. Show ALL working in calculations to obtain full marks. In any question that does not ask for numerical
answers to a specified accuracy, answers should be rounded appropriately.
7. Answer ALL questions, the assignment will be assessed by an in-class quiz that will take place on
Friday 5th May 2023. The in-class quiz is CLOSED BOOK.

Question Four – Dynamics [10 marks]
NZDE LO1
4.1) A truck is pulling a trailer of mass ‘M’ along a horizontal road. A tow bar is connected to the
trailer to achieve the pulling action. Consider this tow bar horizontal and parallel to the road
surface when pulled. The resistance forces acting on the truck and the trailer are constant and
of magnitude 400N and 200N respectively. The truck accelerates at a rate of 0.5 m/s2 and the
tension experienced by the tow bar reaches 600 N. Take the mass of the truck as 2450 kg.

a) Calculate the magnitude of the driving force of the truck (3 marks)

b) Determine the mass of the trailer ‘M’. Assume both truck and trailer have the same
acceleration. (2 marks)

4.2) A vehicle takes 180 s to travel between two points A and B along a straight horizontal road. The
two points, A and B, are 2125 m apart. The vehicle starts from rest at A and moves with
constant acceleration until it reaches a speed of 20 m/s. The vehicle maintains this constant
velocity for some time. It starts decreasing its velocity at a constant rate coming to rest at B.
The magnitude of the deceleration is twice the magnitude of the acceleration. The velocity
versus time graph for the motion is shown below. Calculate the deceleration of the vehicle.
