Precaution on Operation
 The tester is the precision equipment, avoiding hitting.
 The tester is only considered as the auxiliary equipment, please use it according to the
corresponding service manual.
 For screen, flicker occurs at just the moment of the engine ignition.
 During test, ensure the connecting valid to avoid influencing the test by signal abortion.
 Be careful when plugging and unplugging the main cable and diagnostic socket. Tighten
the screw before operation so as to avoid unexpected disconnecting and/or damage to
the port.
 Hold the main unit during operation so as to avoid damage to the port or the main unit.
 Firmly hold the main unit when connecting or disconnecting mini-printer to avoid dropping
down.
 Do not insert or pull out the diagnostic card during operation. Handle with care. Avoid
hitting. Unplug the power after operation.
 Put the cables, connectors and other accessories into box after operation.
 Hold the connector when plug or unplug it. Do not pull the cable for unplugging.

1.Foreword

1.1 Overview

BYD-ED400 diagnostic tester is the special assistant repair equipment developed for all
current vehicle models of BYD Auto Co., Ltd. and BYD Auto Industry Company Limited and it
can diagnose current vehicle models of BYD Auto Co., Ltd. and BYD Auto Industry Company
Limited at any time and in any place as well as updating the program conveniently to diagnose
new systems of succeeding vehicle models. Moreover, BYD-ED400 has a large volume
memory which can accommodate all diagnosis programs for all current vehicle models of BYD
Auto Co., Ltd. and BYD Auto Industry Company Limited Thus it possesses great convenience
and excellent performance.

1.2 Characteristics of ED400

1.2.1. Generality

BYD-ED400 has concise and explicit operation, and the corresponding instruction on
each page.ED300 is applicable to systems of all vehicle models of BYD Auto Co., Ltd. and
BYD Auto Industry Company Limited and basically used the same operation.
The applicable vehicle models: Flyer, F3, F3R, F3CUCKOO, F6, S8, F3DM, F0 as well as all
the succeeding vehicle models of BYD Auto Co., Ltd. and BYD Auto Industry Company
Limited.

1.2.2. Intelligent Update

BYD-ED400 gathers many functions such as firmware update, intelligent update of the
internal program and so on. Therefore, it’s convenient for the user to update.

1.3 Maintenance

1.3.1. Maintenance requirements for the main unit

 Store the ED400 on a flat and dry place with suitable temperature and avoid direct
sunlight or near the heating source.
 Prevent smoke, water and oil from entering the ED400.
 Keep it away from shock and dust.

 Do not disassemble the main unit.
 Clean the outside surface and screen with soft cloth and never use chemicals.
 Don’t put any article on the main unit to avoid element damage.
 Perform maintenance only after the machine is turned off and the power cable is
removed.
 Remove the SD card and put it in the box if longtime left unused. And if there’s a printer,
remove the battery in it.

1.3.2. Consumption Material

Printing paper belongs to the Consumption material, and the model can refer to the
recommended table.

1.4 Help

During operation of ED400, each display page has corresponding guides to help the user.
You can perform the maintenance and repair under the instruction of Vehicle Maintenance
and Repair Manual.

2.Introduction of ED400

2.1 Entire structure scheme

The standard configuration is composed of diagnostic tester, diagnostic card, and


diagnostic connecting cables and so on; the high-level configuration has extended equipment
such as mini-printer and its corollary equipments, support frame, charger and others.
There’s a reserved extended port DB25 for specially selected device.

2.3 ED400 composing equipment list

The standard configuration is composed of diagnostic tester, diagnostic card, diagnostic


connecting cables OBDII/DB15, extended connecting cables DB25/DB9/DV and special
power adapter, the high-level configuration has extended equipment such as mini-printer and
it’s corollary equipments, support frame, charger and others.

Extend equipment( Sold separately according to user’s need)


mini-printer and it’s corollary equipments(including mini-printer 1 unit, printer support frame 1

Notice:
The diagnostic tester with no SD diagnostic card, this card can only be purchased
separately according to the user’s own web.
The standard capacity of the SD card is 2Gb.

3. Diagnosis Using BYD-ED400

The connecting steps:

(1). Insert the diagnostic card into the card slot.


Keep the face labeled “UPSIDE” upward, and make sure the card is fully seated.

(2) Turn the ignition key to the position ON


(3). Insert one end of the cable (DB) into the tester interface DB15.
(Normally connect cable 1 if no screen notice displayed, notice of connecting other cable will
be displayed if the tester connects with other equipment)
(4). Connect the other end (OBDII) to the vehicle diagnostic socket
(For example: the diagnostic socket locates at the upper of the driver pedal with 16 pins OBD-
Ⅱ)
(5)Diagnostic tester displays boot screen and after self-testing then enters to the main interface,
all functions can be operated according to the notice displayed.

4. Keyboard Operation

4.1 Keyboard Layout

BYD-ED400 adopts membrane keyboard, and each operation has the corresponding
instruction on the screen.

4.2 Key-press Descriptions

0-9: to Select menu, and input numbers and others.


↑↓←→: Press ↑↓ to select item, press ←→ to flip the page. During the number input, press ↑
to increase one, press ↓ to decrease one,← is backspace. During the part test, press ← to
turn off, and press → to turn on or activate.
RST: to reset the system.
Note: when the system crashes or there is a long wait, press RST to reset or let the tester
repower.
ESC: to go back to the previous menu, exit current page or settings.
OK: to enter submenu or confirm the operation.
F1, F2: Press F1 to display help, press F2 to print current screen.
Notice: The same key may have different function at different diagnostic module, please operate
the tester according to the notice displayed.

5. Functions Introduction

5.1 Display Interface

The display interface is composed of three columns: heading column, information column
and help column.
As shown in figure 4

5.2 Vehicle Model Diagnosis

The operation of ED400 is as follows


We only demonstrate the operations of DELPHI_MT2U2 and BYD SRS of F3.
For the operations of other systems, please refer to the demonstrative operations.
Select the “Select Operation Items”, as the figure
shown on the right. Press [↑][↓]to select the vehicle
model and press OK to run or press the key number
to access to corresponding diagnostic system.
Operation Skills:
On most menu pages, the user can press corresponding number to enter submenu.
For example: To diagnose F3, the first method: press[↑][↓] to select the vehicle
model, press OK to confirm. The second method: press 2 to enter directly.

Notes:
1.There is a select box front of item, if the box is selected ,the corresponding item is
selected, the same as below.  
2. BYD-ED300 diagnoses every module similarly. Generally speaking, there are two
steps:
Firstly, select the system to diagnose.
Secondly, select the action to run, for instance, read data, read DTC and others.
Select“F3”in vehicle model select interface and you will see all systems of F3(Subject to
actual diagnostic display),the screen will display as the figure 7 shown below.

Notes:
The figures of the examples in this manual may be different from actual diagnostic display
and please don not take them as criterion.

5.2.1 DELPHI-MT20U2 Diagnosis

Select DELPHI-MT20U, which is shown in illustration 8 below.


If the tester communicates with ECU unsuccessfully,,the screen will display as the figure
9 shown below.

Please check the connection and ensure the diagnostic connecting cable is in good
condition.
If the tester communicates with ECU successfully, the screen will display as the figure 10
shown below.

In heading column is the abbreviation of the current communication system: MT20U2..
In information column are the operation types supported by this EUC, such as read ECU
ID, read data and others. → indicates the defaulted executable program currently, which
will run after pressing ‘OK’.
In help column is the instruction of basic operation.
Notes: There are still two methods to run a diagnosis function: 1.Pess “↑” or “↓” to
change the selection, then, press“ OK” to run. 2. Press corresponding number to run.
We don’t repeat them hereinafter, please operate according to the instruction on the
screen.

(1)Read ECU ID
ECU ID is a group of data defined by manufacturer. It is used to mark some basic
information such as Vehicle Identification Number and others. The screen of BYD-ED400 is
displayed as the following.

(2)Read DTC
The faults tested by ECU can take the form of the special code that is DTC.
 If the system has no malfunctions, BYD-ED400 will show no DTC detected.
 If the system has any malfunctions, all the DTC and the information will be listed on the
information column, as the figure shown in the following

Each piece of information has 4 parts. The first part is the sequence which has no
practical meanings. The second part is DTC like P0122,“P” indicates engine’s malfunctions, P
and 0122 compose a DTC compiled by corresponding standard. The third part indicates the
status of the malfunctions (the content is in the brackets) which include three states:
1.Present. It means the current malfunctions that can not be eliminated through clearing
DTC.2.History. It means the malfunctions occurred before but have been solved this time. It
can be eliminated through clearing the DTC.3.Intermittent. It means the malfunctions occurred
by accident and probably because of invalid connecting .Generally speaking, it can be
eliminated through clearing DTC. The finally part is the description of integrated information of
the malfunctions. If the information isn’t recorded in ED400, the screen will display “DTC no

definition”.
“Page:1/2”at the above picture of the interface indicates the information is displayed on
two pages, the current page shows the first five malfunctions, the user can press “→” to enter
the next page according to the instruction, and read other malfunctions information. The user
also can press “←” to return to the page one.

(3)Clear Diagnostic Information


This function is used to clear historical malfunctions and intermittent malfunctions. If the
operation is successful, the screen will display “DTC has been cleared”.
The user had better repeat this operation twice or three times, in order to clear the
malfunctions entirely.

(4)Read Data
The feedback from data flow is the current diagnostic information of the car. For instance,
car speed, engine rev and so on.
BYD-ED400 supports two ways to display the information: ordinary mode and view mode. The
user can switch between the two ways according to the instruction.
Ordinary Mode
The display in the information column is as the figure shown in the following. It displays
the first page currently. The user can press “←” or “→” to flit page and read other data.

View Mode
It can show two Charts on every page. There are three values on the left of graph. From
the upper to the lower: the maximum value, the middle value and the minimum value. Below
the chart are the corresponding words.
The process of dynamic change can be come true by plotting points from left to right at
the fixed time.
At the top right corner of the interface, it shows”Page:4/4”, the flitting operation is the
same as above. There are two modes of view mode: The first one is plot mode, as the figure
shown on the Fig 14. The other is bar chart, as the figure shown on the Fig 15.
Both modes can be switched. For details, please look at the instruction in the help
column.

The current figure can also be printed by mini-printer like the ordinary mode. See the
instruction in help column for details.

(5)I/O Control
I/O control of MT20U2 has three forms: Group On/Off, Group Control and Group
Activate.
The operations are different from each other. We will elaborate respectively below.

Group On-off
The Group On-off means two status: turn on or turn off. So it’s easy to execute the
corresponding actions.
“→” means the current controlling Volume. At the same time the screen can display the
status user expected: turn on or turn off. Then press “↑” or “↓” to select the item. Press “←” to
turn off, press “→” to turn on.
If user wants to give up the selected control, just press “↑” or “↓” to select other items or
press ESC to return, as the figure shown on the P17.
Group Control

The group control is the setting volumes, setting up these volumes can change the
variables of ECU and work status of engine.
“→” indicates current item that can be set up. The user can press “↑” or “↓” to select the
volume.
On the second line of the help column, it shows the setting range of current item, the third
line is the display of input and the forth line is the tip that the user can press OK to set up the
current item.
After the user presses OK, the result of setup will appear in the forth line.
If necessary to give up setup, press “↑” or “↓” to select other items or press ESC to return,
as the figure shown on the P18.

Group Activate
This operation is similar to the operation of controlling group on-off. The interface is as the
figure shown below:

Notice:Group Activate function could contribute to test and repair spare parts, a port of
the functions was active under the special work status of the Engine. If the screen was
displayed that “Refuse to connect the System” during the tester operation, it always be that
the function of the parts didn’t meet the active condition
(6)Resetting the System
This operation can reset the ECU. If the operation is successful, the screen will display “reset
to default”, If the tested parts don’t support such function, the screen will display error.

5.2.2 SRS Diagnosis

Select the SRS on the F3 Model diagnosis page.


After pressing [OK], the screen will display “communicating”. If the communication with
ECU of SRS is defeated, the screen will display “the initialization is failed”. Please retry after
checking the connection.
Notes: Information above is for reference only. Please take the actual one for
standard.
If the communication is ok and the SRS is locked, the tester will remind the user to unlock
the SRS ECU, as the figure shown below.

If the user cancels unlocking, the screen will display “ECU is locked”, unlock firstly. At this
time, press any key to exit.
If the repairer presses [OK] to unlock. After the SRS is unlocking, the screen will display
as the figure shown below.

After unlocking, the tester will remind the user to input current date so that ECU can
record the last service date, as the figure shown below. For the unlocked module, the screen
will display this page at first after establishing the communication.

Input the service date according to the format of Year/Month/Day (For example: Jul. 1st
2009 will be expressed as 09/07/01), after pressing [OK], the tester could enter the diagnose
interface, as the figure shown below:

(1)Diagnostic PC Version
In the main menu of SRS, please select the item ‘Read PC Version’ and press [OK], then the
screen will display the version information as the figure shown below.

(2)Diagnostic System Malfunction


In the main menu of SRS, please select the item” Diagnostic System Malfunction” and
then press [OK] to enter into the submenu. If there’s malfunction in SRS, the screen will
display the relevant malfunction description, as the figure shown below:

(3)Clear Malfunction Code


In the main menu of SRS, please select the item” Clear Malfunction Code” and then press
[OK] to run.

(4)Diagnostic Maintenance Information


In the main menu of SRS, please select the item” Diagnostic Maintenance Information”
and then press [OK] to enter into the submenu
    If the diagnostic operation is OK, the screen will display the information as the figure
show below:
If the ECU of SRS was never been repaired, the screen will display the letter”N/A”

(5)Diagnostic VIN Information


In the main menu of SRS, please select the item” Diagnostic VIN Information” and then
press [OK] to enter into the submenu. If the operation is OK, the screen will display the VIN

code. If the ECU of SRS didn’t send the information, the screen will display the letter” N/A”

(6)Testing the function of SRS warning light


In the main menu of SRS, please select the item” Testing the function of SRS warning
light” and then press [OK] to enter into the submenu.
If the operation is OK, the screen will display the content”The operation has done”, as the
figure show below. At the moment, the repairer will see that the light will flash twice and then
extinguish (That’s the once the operation of testing the function of SRS warning light).

(8)Historical Speed
In the main menu of SRS, please select the item” Historical Speed” and then press [OK]
to enter into the submenu

(9)Working Information
In the main menu of SRS, please select the item” Working Information” and then press
[OK] to enter into the submenu.
The parameter is displayed pagination. The repairer press [→] [←] to check the content.
The screen will displayed as the figure 29 and 30

5.3  Diagnostic Tester Version

Select and enter the item” Diagnostic Tester Version”. The screen will display the follow
date: the Tester ID, the software version, the hardware version, the produce date and so on,
as the figure 31

5.4 Setting Tester

Select and enter the item” Setting Tester”. Tester Setup, and set up the diagnostic status
of ED400, such as: on-off of backlight, the control of buzzer and others.

5.5 Query the Malfunction Code

The function is to help the repairer to input the Code to query the Malfunction Information.
After entering into the Query system, please select different system to the query (such as:
BOSCH) and then by pressing [←][→] to select the input position, and by pressing [↑][↓] to
select the region code (P C B U),and the other number could be inputted by pressing number
keyboard or [↑][↓]. Finally press [OK] to the query.
The meaning of Region Codes:
P (Powertrain)
C (Chassis)
B (Body)
U (Network)

6.Solution of FAQ

Q1: When running an operation during communication, the screen displays “Request
Refused!”, “Requirements are not fulfilled!” and others. Why?
A1: The reason of this fault is that the center control unit of the system tested can’t
support the order or deal with others so that it can’t finish the order or the tester gives the
negative respond as term invalid. At this time the user should press any key to return to the
previous page and retry once to three times, if the fault is the same, please read the service
guide carefully or consult to professionals or other related maintenance engineers.

Q2: During communication, the tester has no responses after running the operation; the
screen displays “Operation Unsuccessfully!” or “Communication Abortion” and others in
different conditions. Why?
A2:
1) Please confirm the testing parts and items whether were met the selecting Vehicle
Model Type.
2) Please check the connect line and the plug to ensure them connected well.

Q3: If the screen displays that can not find SD Card


A3: If the screen displays that “CAN NOT FIND SD CARD,PLEASE INSERT ONE!”,

which means that there is system fault in reading date from SD card, please confirm the SD
Card is plugged in correctly and the date is completed.

Q4: How to do while the SD card was damaged and lost


A4:Please connect the BYD Auto and then buy a new one.

APPENDIX: After-sales Service Guide

(a) Warranty Service


If you met any problems of using the Tester(ED 400), please contact the distributor or
the Customer Service Engineer who is in charge of your market, we will solve you
problem timely when we got your information.

(b)Term of Service and Content:


1. Term of Service
Diagnostic Tester: after sale within one year and not damaged by man-made
Diagnostic Card: after sale within eighteen months and not damaged by man-made
Printer: after sale within six months and not damaged by man-made
Two Connected Cables: after sale within six months and not damaged by man-made

2. Charging to Repair
1) Exceed the term.
2) Damaged by violating the tester operation manuals and notes.
3) Damaged by man-made such as moving, dropping, crashing, pressing and others.
4) Damaged by disasters after sale, such as: fire, earthquake, water and others.
5) If changes or modifications without permission of BYD,we will claim the responsibility, and
bear no responsibility.
6) Get the increasing diagnostic modules of vehicle model.
7) Update the program by changing the diagnostic card.
8) The user should feed back the service condition and the questions actively.
