Notes Project

The document outlines the steps for a gear project, including designing the gears with assumptions for factors like module and number of teeth, checking factors of safety for stresses, designing the shaft with a bending moment diagram and torque diagram to calculate diameter, and selecting suitable bearings and providing engineering drawings with a 2D sketch and 3D assembly model including a casing. The project is worth 15% of the grading and makes assumptions that can be iterated if factors of safety are out of range.

For those who were asking about the project steps, here is what u r supposed to do:

a) For the gears:

There are several assumptions:

1- Assume module for all the gears.

2- Assume No. of teeth for the pinion and with the Transmission ratio get the No. of teeth
of the gear.

3- Some factors such as KH, KB, Yz, HB, Cp,….etc will be assumed.

4- Concerning the factor of YN (stress cycle life factor), the number of cycles will be

calculated by multiplying the speed given in rpm (convert from minutes to hours) and the

life in hours.

5- Check the 4 factors of safety for all the gears (contact and beding stresses),

The factor of safety ranges from 1- 10. If the factor of safety is out of range, try to change

some assumptions, not all of them.

b) For the shaft:

1- Draw bending moment diagram and torque diagram.(Design 1, tutorial 1)

2- Length the shaft must be = face width of the gear + 25 mm from right and 25 mm from

left and a land for the bearings (you can assume 15 for each).

3- Factor of safety is preferable to be 2 (assume any factors), calculate the diameter

using the rules of static factor of safety (lecture 8 of Design 1 slide 6 ) and then make

iterations using any of the fatigue safety factors rules in lecture 8 (Goodman, Gerber,

ASME elliptic), then choose a standard shaft diameter (according to the bearing tables)
4- Remember that in order to calculate the static diameter, u have to calculate the

moment Ma at the critical section and the torque Tm (the tangential force on the gear

multiplied by the radius).

5- You have to include stress concentration factors (Kf, Kfs); there must be different

cross sections (D/d, r/d). Revise tutorials 6 and 7 Design 1 (Kfm = Kf and Kfsm =

Kfs)

6- You have to ensure that you fix the gears on both shafts in the axial direction properly

(ex. shoulder and snap ring for helical gear. For the spur gear 2 snap rings) or any other

suggestion based on reference.

c) For the coupling between the shaft and the gear (Tutorial 9
solution of Design 1)

1- You are free to choose the method (preferably Key).

2- You already have its length face width.

3- Based on factor of safety of 2 choose suitable width and thickness (review standard

cross-sections in the book or online).

d) For the bearings:

Select suitable roller bearing based on your knowledge; either

i) Tut 9 (Ball bearings for spur gears).
ii) Tut 10 (Taper roller bearings or ball bearings for helical gears).
e) For the drawing:

You are required to provide a 2d sketch following all the engineering drawing rules with

sufficient views including all the extra parts needed, in addition to a 3d drawing assembly

including the casing.

Important note:
The project grading is 15%;

Good luck.
