CONCRETE DEMOLITION

1. SCOPE
The scope of this method statement is to describe in detail a construction
methodology for civil works associated with pre-cast installation and concrete
demolition. Identification of associated hazards and mitigation methods to be
taken in order to execute all works safely as per project requirements and
specification.

3. DEFINITIONS

4. RESPONSIBILITY
4.1 The Civil Engineer
• Civil engineer will supervise all activities on the area based on project scope
of work and as per relevant standards and project specification.
4.2 The Construction Supervisor
• Construction Supervisor is required to ensure that all works are carried out as
per approved drawings, project specifications & requirements.
• Construction Supervisor will ensure that the work is covered with valid work
permits from QP, wherever applicable, and all permit/safety requirements are
strictly followed.
• Conduct tool box talks explaining the hazards associated with the work and
the mitigation measures.

4.3 The Civil QC Inspector (QCIC)


• QCIC will ensure that all activities that are required to be inspected have been
inspected and approved by QP.
• Accompany the company representative while carrying out inspections and
release of hold points.
• Issue CAR, When and Where required, and ensure that construction provide
& implement the corrective action.
4.4 The Safety Officer
• Safety officer will ensure that the work is covered with valid work permits from
government agencies QP, wherever applicable, and all permit & safety
requirements strictly followed.
• Safety officer will ensure that tool box talks are carried at all work locations, as
per HSE Plan.
• Safety officer will ensure that work locations are appropriately barricaded and
safety signs are provided.
• Any unsafe act or condition will be immediately stopped and reported to the
HSE Manager & Constructive Supervisor
4.5 The Surveyor
• To make sure all permits and location before start survey. Also verify and
ensure the survey instruments working in good conditions and valid calibrated
certificates before commencing the work
• Study the drawings thoroughly and make ensure all the drawings are
approved by QP.
• Before commencing the survey works check any obstacles from existing
facilities and underground utilities.
• Control points shall be checked periodically from QP Reference points to
ensure control points are not disturbed.
• If any changes of values or coordinates variations arises inform to site
engineer/manager. Also keep the records for references.
4.6 The Banks Man
• Directing the movement and loading/unloading of vehicles and directing the
movement of mobile plant.
• Controlling the movements of excavator or other mobile plant, by carefully.
• Carefully monitoring the bucket (equipment) for any obstructions to other
vehicle movements/pedestrians.
4.7 The Equipment Driver/Operator
• Operate the equipment in the right direction and angles to prevent accidents
and damage of property.
• Maintain proper coordination and cooperation with the road and transport
system while driving/working, so that the normal activities are not disrupted.
• Perform periodical safety, maintenance or servicing checks to ensure proper
functioning of the equipment.

5. RESOURSE
5.1 Manpower
AL-BALAGH shall adequately resource the foundations construction works with
staff, which are well versed and experienced, crafts to be utilized be are outlined
are as follows:

1- Civil Engineer. 3- Steel fixers


2- Construction Supervisor 4- Helpers

5.2 Equipment.
AL-BALAGH has allocated licensed, authorized and certificated equipment which
will be available and can be deployed to any section of work as when required
bases. The types of equipment are enumerated as follows:

1- Self loader 4-Fire extinguisher


2-. Jack Hammer 5-Area monitor
3- Air Compressor 6-Hand Tools

In addition, equipment shall be maintained in work worthy and operational condition.


6. HSE REQUIREMENT
• Permit to work system to be followed as per QP requirement.
• Safety toolbox talks will be carried at all work locations, as per contractors
approved HSE Plan.
• Ensure that Air compressor to be inspected and approved by QP HSE
department before use.
• Trained operator only to be allowed for use of Jack hammer.
• The HSE aspects of the operation will be direct responsibility of the appointed
HSE lead and shall be accordance with project HSE plan.
• The labour force shall use the required PPE's on site during work. Also tool box
talks shall be conducted on regular basis and all hazards shall be identified and
controlled.
• Appropriate PPE must be worn while using the pneumatic Jack hammer, such
as earmuff, apron, face shield.
• All crew shall be briefed with the hazards involved in the operation tool box talk
shall be carried out on daily basis.
• Supervisor will impart tool box talks to his crew especially for hazard involved
and subsequent control measure.
• Existing site facilities shall be protected, prior to carry out the activities at site.
7. WORK PROCEDURE
7.1 Concrete Demolition
• Make sure proper care shall be taken while breaking the concrete. Proper
warning sign shall be placed prior to carry out the activity.
• Concrete breaking shall be carried out by manual/mechanical jack

hammer. Then remained reinforcement shall be cut off after concrete is


broken away.
• All debris generated shall be kept at a designated area and be removed in
daily basis from the sites immediately. Proper housekeeping shall be
maintained throughout the whole operation.
• Contractor shall make sure the availability of equipment’s for debris shifting
and provide hard barricades around existing near facilities.
• Also contractor shall concern about neighborhood cleanliness and take
immediate remedial actions, if the neighborhood has been affected by these
demolition activities.
• During darkness, barricades shall be made clearly visible by use of flashing
lights in traffic areas and where adjacent regular activities by others are
in progress.
7.2 MATERIAL SHIFTING
• Contractor shall make sure the availability of shifting equipment prior to carry
out the activities and provide hard barricading around the existing facilities.
• The debris shall be removed and disposed in daily basis from the site to the
permitted area.
• Contractor shall be fully responsible for any damages may occur during the
shifting process at site.
