Math11.Differentiation and Derivative of of Algebraic Functions

The document discusses differentiation, derivatives, and finding derivatives of algebraic functions. Differentiation is the process of finding the derivative of a function, which represents the instantaneous rate of change. Derivatives can be used to define the rate of change of one function with respect to another. There are standard formulas for taking derivatives of common algebraic functions like constants, variables, square roots, and more.

WHAT IS
DIFFERENTIATION?
In calculus, differentiation is one of the two important
concepts apart from integration. Differentiation is a method
of finding the derivative of a function. Differentiation is a
process, in Maths, where we find the instantaneous rate of
change in function based on one of its variables.

The most common example is the rate change of

displacement with respect to time, called velocity. The
opposite of finding a derivative is antidifferentiation. If x is a
variable and y is another variable, then the rate of change of
x with respect to y is given by dy/dx. This is the general
expression of derivative of a function and is represented as
f'(x) = dy/dx, where y = f(x) is any function

WHAT IS
DIFFERENTIATION
IN MATHS?
In Mathematics, Differentiation can be defined as a derivative of a
function with respect to an independent variable. Differentiation,
in calculus, can be applied to measure the function per unit
change in the independent variable.

Let y = f(x) be a function of x. Then, the rate of change of “ y

” per unit change in “ x ” is given by: dy / dx

WHAT IS
DERIVATIVE?
The concept of a derivative is derived from the development
of the concept of limits. As we know, the limit for a function
f(x) at a point ‘ a ’ is the value that the function f(x) tends to
achieve at point ‘ a ’ if it exists. Basically, with limits, we tend
to define a function ’ s domain i.e. the reason in which the
functional results can be obtained. We have seen domains of
various functions, for example, the domain of the function
sinx is (-1, 1). This is where we introduce the concept of
Derivative.

Derivative of a function is the rate of change of the output

value with respect to its input value. On the other hand, the
differential is the actual change of a function. Most
importantly, differentiation is the process of finding a
derivative

Assume a function f(x) within its domain. Let us say, this

function involves the calculation of the rate of change of
velocity or as we know it the acceleration of a vehicle as it
moves from one point to the other. Now obviously the rate of
change of velocity is instantaneous as the function is
dependent on both the speed as well as the direction of the
vehicle. If we are to find the instantaneous acceleration of the
vehicle we will need the limits of the function at that instant. A
function denoting the rate of change of another function is
called as a derivative of that function. In other words, a
derivative is used to define the rate of change of a function.
The concept of limits and derivative is very important and
forms the base of calculus. Students are expected to have a
clear understanding of these concepts so as to enable them to
effectively utilize them in the future.

DERIVATIVE
OF ALGEBRAIC FUNCTIONS
There are some standard results with algebraic functions and
they are used as formulas in differential calculus to find the
differentiation of algebraic functions.

Derivative of Constant

The derivative of any constant with respect to

a variable is equal to zero.

Derivative of Variable
The derivative of a variable with respect to
same variable is equal to one.

Derivative of square root

The derivative of square root of a variable with respect
to same variable is equal to the quotient of one by two
times the square root of the variable.

Derivative of Exponential functions

Derivative of log function
