Quarter 4 – Module 3:
Atmosphere: Security Blanket
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any
part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other
activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.

A wonderful day to you, little scientist! In this module, you will learn
the concept of the Earth’s atmosphere. You shall learn how energy from the
sun interacts with the layers of the atmosphere.

Specifically, you are expected to:

• identify the layers of the atmosphere;
• differentiate the layers of the atmosphere based on variation of
temperature; and

Questions:

2
1. What is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere?

2. What happens to the atmosphere as it reaches outer space?

3. Explain why the earth's atmosphere is known as security blanket?

The Layers of the Atmosphere

The atmosphere is the blanket of gases that surrounds Earth. It is made

up of a mixture of gases, mostly nitrogen and oxygen. It is divided into five
layers, namely, Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and
Exosphere. The layers of the atmosphere are separated according to its
temperature.

Figure 1: Five layers of the Earth’s Figure 2: The layers of the atmosphere have
atmosphere and the things different temperature gradients,
that you can find in every layer. creating its thermal structure.

Earth’s atmosphere has a series of layers, each with its specific traits.
Moving upward from the ground level, these layers are named the
troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Below
is a table identifying the specific traits of each layer.

Table 1: Atmospheric layers Characteristics

Layers of the Altitude Temperature in °C Description

Atmosphere in km

3
• The layer closest to
Troposphere 0 - 20 15 to -60 the Earth’s surface.
• Weather occurs here
because it contains
most of the water
vapor.
• Air in this layer is
constantly moving as
a result, aircraft flying
may have a bumpy
ride (turbulence).
• Many jet aircraft flies
Stratosphere 20 - 50 -51 to -15 in this layer because it
is very stable.
• The ozone layer is
found in this area. It
absorbs the Sun’s
ultraviolet (UV) rays
that can be harmful to
plant and animal life.
• Meteor or rock
Mesosphere 50 - 85 -15 to -120 fragments burn up in
this layer.
• Space shuttles fly
Thermosphere 90 - 84 - 2000 here, and it also where
1000 the auroras are found.
Auroras, referred to as
northern lights, are
caused when the solar
wind strike gases in
the atmosphere above
the poles.
• UV and X-ray
radiation from the Sun
are absorbed in this
layer.
• This layer merges into
Exosphere 500 - 1500 space.
10000 • Satellites are stationed
in this area.

4
• The thin air transmits
little heat in these
levels.

The layers of the atmosphere is the main reason why the Earth is
protected from any harmful objects from the outer space. Living organisms in
the Earth feel safe and protected.

Let Us Practice

Activity 1:
Direction: Complete the table below with the correct atmospheric descriptors
found in the box.

The Earth’s atmosphere is divided into five layers. The first layer is
the Troposphere followed by Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere and
Exosphere. Each layer has a unique property and role in protecting the
Earth.

5
Let Us Practice More
Direction: Complete the concept map with the correct details. Use a
separate sheet for your answers.

The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of different gases. They are

divided into five (5) layers and also have boundaries. Factors such as
pressures, altitude, and temperature are also indicators that the layers of
Earth’s atmosphere varies.

6
Let Us Remember

• The atmosphere is divided into five layers and comprises 78%

Nitrogen, Oxygen 21%, and other inactive gases 1%.
• Moving upward from ground level, these layers are named the
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and
Exosphere.
• The ozone layer can be found in the stratosphere.
• The coldest layer is the mesosphere.
• The thermosphere is where you can find the Aurora borealis.
• The exosphere is the last layer, and it merges into space.

Let Us Enhance

Study the data below and answer the following questions.

Layers of the Estimated Altitude Estimated

atmosphere (km) Temperature (°C)
Troposphere 20 -60
Stratosphere 50 -15
Mesosphere 85 -120
Thermosphere 1000 2000
Exosphere 10000 1500

1. What are estimated temperatues of each layer?

2. What is the relationship between the altitude and

temperature in each layers?

3. On what layers of the atmosphere shows that the

temperature increases as the altitude increase.

If Earth did not have such a thick atmosphere, life would probably
never have formed. The atmosphere closes around the planet, absorbing
heat from the sun.
