Tutorial 3b - Data Types 1

This document provides guidelines for creating different types of charts from a loan dataset. It includes: 1. Descriptions of quantitative and qualitative data types. Quantitative data uses numbers while qualitative data uses categories. 2. A data dictionary specifying the data types for variables in a loan Excel file. 3. Instructions to create 5 different charts (bar chart, pie chart, histogram, scatter plot, line chart) using the loan dataset and to plot suitable charts for 5 scenarios analyzing variables like age, gender, marital status, and monthly payments. 4. The student's responses creating the requested charts, identifying patterns like the majority of clients being single and May having the highest monthly payments.

DATA TYPES

There are two types of data (qualitative and qualitative), that record various kinds of
information.
Quantitative: The information is recorded as numbers and represents an objective
measurement or a count. Temperature, weight, and a count of transactions are all
quantitative data.

Qualitative: The information represents characteristics that you do not measure with
numbers. Instead, the observations fall within a countable number of groups. In fact, this
type of variable can capture information that isn’t easily measured and can be subjective.
Table 1 is data dictionary that specifies data type for variables in Loan.xls

Table 1. Data dictionary

No Variable name Data type Measurement level
1 ID No Numeric Discrete
2 Gender Categorical Discrete (Binary)
3 Education Categorical Ordinal
4 Marital status Categorical Nominal
5 Age Numeric Continuous
6 Loan outstanding status Categorical Nominal
7 Loan amount Numeric Continuous
8 Amount paid Numeric Continuous

Figure 1. Chart guidelines

Using dataset provided in Loan dataset.xls, complete the following tasks. Use
the provided tutorial template to submit your answer.

A. Based on guidelines given in Figure 1, plot:

1. a bar chart,
2. a pie chart,
3. a histogram,
4. a scatter plot,
5. a line chart.

B. Plot a suitable chart for each of the following scenarios:

1. Plot a scatter chart for age. From the scatter chart, identify how many clients are
ABOVE 70 years old.

2. Fill in the following table using COUNTIF. Count gender and plot a suitable chart for
it.
Education Level Number of clients
FEMALE
MALE

3. Fill in the following table using COUNTIF. Count marital status and plot a suitable
chart for it. Determine which client category is the LARGEST.
MARITAL STATUS Number of clients

4. Fill in the following table using COUNTIF. Determine which education category is the
LARGEST and SMALLEST.
Education Level Number of clients
