PRACTICUM 1 STUDENT SELF-EVALUATION FORM

(To be submitted at the end of the semester)

Student name: Melissa Mulderink

School: Abbotsford School District
Grade Level: Early Childhood and Middle/High School
Cooperating Teacher: Jerlinda Seefeld & Jaime Kaiser
Date: 12/5/2022

Use this self-evaluation tool to reflect on the following course competencies. Reflect on your progress
and share specific examples from your placement experience. Please type and upload into your
portfolio.

Course Competency 1: Demonstrate a professional work ethic.

I have a connection to the students in the high school: I went to school with them. In my head, they are
my peers more than students. However, I feel like I have been able to mostly put that aside and take on
more of a teacher’s role when working with them. I have gone above and beyond to help out where
needed, always asking ‘what’s next’. I have been able to cooperate with other teachers and aides to
help the students while at the same time bonding with both the students and teachers. As an example, I
have played games with the students in the high school, but also helped them with math.

Course Competency 2: Adhere to role-specific responsibilities.

I feel like I know when to step back and when to step up to help. I feel like working in the classroom
more on the paraprofessional end rather than just a high school student helping out has really helped
me to see more where I’m needed. For example, in the classroom, I know that I need to help to keep
students where they need to be, especially during lessons; I know that part of my responsibility is to
help play the right videos. I also know that I am not in charge of teaching the lessons themselves.

Course Competency 3: Reflect on the Practicum learning experience.

I feel like I don’t reflect in the moment so much, but when the day is done and I am thinking about what
I did during the day, I am able to look back and see things I did really well. I am able to see where I have
improved and really think about how this experience is affecting my viewpoints and where I want to end
up. Most of this has been through doing the practicum journals.

Course Competency 4: Assist the teacher in preparing for the instruction/evaluation process.

I don’t think I have done a whole lot of this as of yet. However, I have helped to clean the area where
lessons are taught, handed items to the teacher while they are teaching to make things flow easier, and
cut out papers to be used for instruction.

Course Competency 5: Apply proactive management techniques.

I feel like I have gotten a lot better at seeing things that lead up to the problems before they become
problems. As an example, when one of the students in the elementary got his pants wet when we came
in from recess one day, I quickly rubbed them dry in order to prevent him from taking them off.

Course Competency 6: Apply problem-solving strategies in the school setting.

I think working at the school has improved my problem solving abilities greatly. I am able to see a need
and come up with ways to try and meet that need. For example, when a student was picking the cheese
off of the pieces of pizza he was eating, I solved the problem and just took all the cheese off it.

Course Competency 7: Create a professional development plan.

Working in a classroom in general I think has improved my professional development. Seeing the other
side of things has really changed my point of view. I have had to adapt to the new role I am coming into.
It’s a big change for me, but I think I am starting to fit in well. When learning about a professional
development experience that is available to paraprofessionals at Abbotsford, I realized that I want to
learn more about how to help students with diverse home lives.

Course Competency 8: Apply effective behavior when interacting with children in a diverse educational
environment.

I think I am really good at this mostly due to the fact that the classrooms that I am in are special
education. One of the students who has autism will climb on top of chairs and desks for attention and
thinks it’s funny. I have been able to show no reaction while making sure he knows that it is not safe to
do that.

Course Competency 9: Implement teacher developed instructional plans.

I feel like I can do an activity with students as long as the teacher explains what I need to do and possibly
demonstrates it. In the classroom, I worked with a student on money-something I had not done or seen
done before. After it was explained and an example was given, I was able to effectively work with the
student.

What do you consider to be your major strengths as a prospective paraprofessional?

I think my strengths are being able to adapt to every situation and change my actions and techniques
based on student needs and actions. I have progressed in these areas by observing what the others in
the classroom do to help the students and applying those techniques to my own knowledge. I am only at
the school twice a week: Mondays and Fridays. In the classroom, they add things to circle time
throughout the middle of the week, so when I come in on Friday, it might not be the same as it was on
Monday. I have been able to quickly pick up on the new things and fill in where help is needed.

In what areas would you like to grow in as a paraprofessional?

I would like to grow in my abilities to explain things to people and strategies for dealing with difficult
behaviors. I have progressed in this area by learning strategies for specific behaviors and working with
students on activities and trying to explain things differently. When I was helping a student with money
once, he got stuck on $.86. I was trying to explain to him that there are no dollars, so the next dollar up
would be 1 without giving him the answer, but I couldn’t come up with any other way to explain it.
