End-Semester Examination-2021
Course: C-401/601 (Physical methods in Chemistry II)
Time- 3hrs. Full Marks – 60 04.12.2021

Q1. Predict the EPR spectrum of the following compound:

{(63Cu, 65Cu, I = 3/2), (1H, I = ½), (12C, I = 0), (14N, I = 1), (2H, I = 1)}

[3×2=6]
Q2. Which of the following will show electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum? Give reason for your
choice.
(a) H (b) Cl (c) Na+ (d) Cu+
[4]

Q3. The benzene anion has g = 2.0025. At what magnetic induction B, would its ESR spectral line be
centred at frequency 9.350 GHz?
[Planck's constant =6.62607004 × 10-34 m2 kg / s; e = 9.2741 × 10-24 J T-1]
[6]

Q4. Predict the ESR spectrum pattern for NO(SO3)22- radical if I =1 for nitrogen which is here the
only nucleus having spin.

[3]
Q5. The ESR spectrum of a radical with a single magnetic nucleus is split into four lines of equal
intensity. What is the spin of the nucleus?

Q6. Predict the Mossbauer spectra of these compounds:

[3×2=6]
Q7. Predict the Mossbauer spectra of these compounds:

(a) Fe(CO)5
(b) Fe2(CO)9
(c) Fe3(CO)12

[3×2=6]
Q8. Ferredoxins are iron-sulfur proteins that mediate electron transfer in a variety of metabolic
reactions. Electron transfer is accompanied by iron redox chemistry in the Fe2S2 core. The 57Fe
Mossbauer spectra of the oxidised and reduced forms of Scenedesmus ferredoxin are shown below.
Use these data to account for the electronic structure of ferredoxin in its oxidised and reduced form.

Q9. Predict the ENDOR spectra of these compounds:

[2.5×2=5]

Q10. A compound with molecular formula: C6H10O (A) shows the 1H NMR pattern at 2.22 (m) and 1.82
(m), where the integration of both the multiplets are in 2:3 ratio and the IR frequency is at: 1720
cm-1. Another starting material C3H5O2Cl (B) with 1H NMR pattern 1.3 ppm (triplet) and 3.92 ppm
(quartet) reacts with A in the presence of a base to form products C and D. The molecular formula
of C and D are: C9H14O3. 1H NMR for C: 1.29 (triplet); 4.21 (quartet); 3.05 (triplet, 1H); 2.27 (m,
4H); 1.85 (m, 4H). 1H NMR for D: 1.29 (triplet); 4.21 (quartet); 2.33 (m, 4H), 1.74 (m, 4H) and
16.77 (brs, 1H). Identify A to D.
