Assignment-7: Useful Information

This document provides information to calculate the heat transfer and pressure drop for a distilled water-raw water heat exchanger. It gives specifications for the exchanger including tube dimensions, fluid flow rates and temperatures. It also provides equations to calculate the Reynolds number, clean overall heat transfer coefficient, shell and tube side pressure drops, and determine if the exchanger will be suitable for the given application. Key parameters include a 175,000 lb/hr distilled water stream entering at 93°F and leaving at 85°F transferring heat to a 280,000 lb/hr raw water stream entering at 75°F and leaving at 80°F through a 15 1⁄4” ID exchanger with 160 tubes.

Assignment-7

1. Calculation of a distilled-water//Raw-water exchanger: 175,000lb/hr of distilled water enters an

exchanger at 93 oF and leaves at 85 oF. The heat will be transferred to 280,000lb/hr of raw water coming from
supply at 75 oF and leaving the exchanger at 80 oF. A 10 psi pressure drop may be expended on both streams while
providing a fouling factor of 0.0005 h/ft2.oF.Btu for distilled water and 0.0015 for raw water when the tube velocity
exceeds 6fps. Available for this service is a 15 ¼ “ ID exchanger having 160 tubes with ¾” OD, 0.05393’ ID, 18 BWG
tubes 16’ 0” long and laid out on 15/16” triangular pitch. The bundle is arranged for two passes, and baffles are
spaced 12” apart. Find a) the Reynolds number in shell and tubes sides? b) Clean overall Heat transfer coefficient?
c) Pressure drop in shell side and tube side. d) Will the exchanger be suitable?
Given: Viscosity of fluids in shell and tube sides is 1.96 and 2.23 lb/ft.h respectively. The colburn factor for shell
and tube sides is 73 and 14, respectively. Assume Cp is 1 btu/lb.oF for both side fluids. The value k for shell and
tube side fluids are 0.36 and 7.78 Btu/h.ft2.oF.ft , respectively. The fanning friction factor of shell side is fs=0.0019
ft2/in2 and tube side is ft=0.00019 ft2/in2 . ρ, density of water 62.5 lb/ft3.
