A Word from your SOS President

Congratulations on your acceptance into the Science One program! Im sure all of you are very excited to be here, and maybe a little scared too. Dont concern yourselves too much with studying to let this perfect opportunity to build life-long friendships simply slip away. Believe me, Science One is more than just an academic experience. Really, finding the balance between studying and having fun may be the biggest step toward your survival of Science One. And the Science One Survivors are here to help you find that balance. Take full advantage of the social events that we are planning for you to make new friends and memories that will last a lifetime. Just remember, what you learn wont last but memories will. I have already forgotten a significant portion of what I was taught in Science One last year. But the memories keep flooding back: hard-core cramming for midterms and final exams, classwide co-operation on the math assignments, mental and physical sufferings during the hours before the deadline for T1 and T2 projects, and the adrenaline rush while waiting in line for the printer just minutes before the deadline. While many memories are painful and I would hate to go back and re-experience the whole thing, just the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment of having gone through all those hardships is, in itself, the reward we have the privilege of cherishing after only the first year of university. While accomplishing both the social and academic demands of the program is a tough feat, thats what makes the experience more valuable. Don't ever stop giving your best. At times, even the best of us are tempted to do so. Whenever I look back at my Science One experience, I always regret not giving it my all. Dont let your wonderful memories (academic or not) be tainted with such regret. You have chosen to be the special handful of the thousands of incoming first year students at UBC. Now choose to make the most out of it.

Mentorship Program
We understand and empathize that your first year of university, and in particular Science One, can be a daunting task to undertake. With that in mind, the mentorship program has been a SOS tradition of sorts in the past few years. Well pair you up with a past Science One student mentor, who is your go-to person for occasional questions. They will also provide helpful advice or tips to help ease your way into your Science One year. Whether its help with time management or pre-exam preparation tips, a SOS mentor is there for you. Well do our best to pair you up with a compatible mentor (with perhaps a similar degree or career interests), so they can help Acting out string theory! you answer any questions you may have when facing the decision of choosing your own degree! The sign-up form for the SOS mentorship program is included with your registration form for the club. If you have any questions feel free to talk to Jay or Kathy, or send us an email at: [email protected].

Sure, math and physics are fun but Im sure our Halloween party with CSP will also be a blast. Also look forward to the year end Science One/ CSP formal, and make sure to bring your dancing shoes! It will be a night of celebration and much needed after the grueling months of classes. We are also bringing back the annual Whistler Ski/ Snowboard Trip, which is 3 days and 2 nights of snowy fun. Science ONE Survival Tips:

Engage with your professors, go to office hours and just talk to them. If you enjoy their lectures, you will love meeting them one-on-one to talk about their research or just life in general. (Some of them even have Facebook!) Get to know your classmates! Youre in a small class, so make the most it, find a study buddy (or group) because the math problems can get really tricky! You will get SOAKED at Bamfield, so bring waterproof clothing, including rubber boots. Have fun at Bamfield, its the time to bond with your new classmates and teachers. However, after youre back, be prepared to start doing readings ASAP. Dont procrastinate! Keep up with your class material, its really easy to fall behind and midterms come way sooner than you think! Be careful when you fall asleep in class. READ the question (multiple times)!

Find one person to master and control the lights in IBLC 261. Some profs can barely manage that thing, and guest lecturers will definitely be lost.

LASTLY, come out to SOS events, they were planned especially for you! Bamfield 2010: Quiz Night (left) and during the BIOL 140 field study (right)
