Doppler Effect Worksheet

1) The document discusses the Doppler effect and how it causes the redshift phenomenon when observing stars. It explains that stars moving away from Earth will have their light waves stretched out toward longer, red wavelengths due to the Doppler effect. 2) It then asks multiple choice questions about the Doppler effect diagram and electromagnetic spectrum to test the reader's understanding of these concepts. Questions focus on identifying which direction indicates a star moving toward or away from Earth based on light wave compression or stretching, and identifying locations of different wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum chart. 3) The final questions relate the Big Bang theory and redshift observations, asking how redshift provides evidence that distant galaxies are moving away from Earth, consistent with an

Doppler Effect & Red-Shift Worksheet

Date Period
Activity 1: Answer the following questions based on the passage and diagram.

The light waves of a star go through a similar shift. If the star is coming closer, the light waves are compressed
(pushed) together. This makes light waves move toward the blue spectrum. If a star is moving away, the light
waves get stretched apart. This makes the light waves move toward the red spectrum. This is called the red
shift. When the light waves of stars in surrounding galaxies are examined, we notice that they are giving off
long waves, which means they are in the red spectrum. Red Spectrum light waves are longer waves.

1) What side of the picture would show a star moving toward Earth?
A) Side A B) Side B

2) What side of the picture would show a star moving away from Earth?
A) Side A B) Side B

3) Which side of the picture shows the Red Shift?

A) Side A B) Side B

Activity 2: Answer the following questions using the Electromagnetic Spectrum table in the
