Module Title: Digital Signal Processing
Semester: Spring 2017

Answer all/ no. of the following questions:

Question 1:……………………………………………………………….. (5 Marks)

a) Check the causality of the following system
y[n] = x[n]+ 4x[n+3]
Solution:
The output depends on the future input x[n+3]
So the system is non-causal
To check, if we substitute
y[3] = x[3]+4x[6]
The output at n=3, depends on the future input at n=6
So the system is non-causal

b) Check the linearity of the following system

y[n] = Ax[n]+B
Solution:
T{a1x1[n]+a2x2[n]}
= A(a1x1[n]+a2x2 [n])+B ……….……(1)
a1T{x1[n]}+a2T{x2 [n]}
=a1 (Ax1[n]+B)+a2 (Ax2 [n]+B) ……….(2)
(1)≠(2)
The system non-linear

c) Check the time variance of the following system

y[n] = x[-n]
Solution:
T{x[n-no]} = x[-n-no]….……………(1)
y[n-no]= x[-(n-no)] = x[-n+no] ……(2)
(1)≠(2)
The system time-variant

d) Check the stability of the following system

y[n] = 4x[n-3]+3
Solution:
Suppose x[n]=C δ[n], y[-1]=0,
x[n]=C at n=0, and x[n]=0 otherwise (bounded input)
y[0] = 4x[0-3]+3 = 4x[-3]+3 = 0+3=3
y[1] = 4x[1-3]+3 = 4x[-2]+3 = 0+3=3
y[2] = 4x[2-3]+3 = 4x[-1]+3 = 0+3=3
y[3] = 4x[3-3]+3 = 4x[0]+3 = 4C+3
y[4] = 4x[4-3]+3 = 4x[1]+3 = 0+3=3
If 1<|C|<∞, the output is bounded, the system is stable.

e) Check if the following systems are static or dynamic

i. y[n] = n x[n] + bx3[n]
ii. y[n] = x[n] + 3x[n-1]
Solution:
i. static or memoryless
ii. dynamic or with memory

systems:
y(n)= x(n) - x(n - 1) + 2x(n - 2 ) - 3x(n – 4)

Determine the direct form 11 realization for each of the following LTI systems
y(n)= x(n) - x(n - 1) + 2x(n - 2 ) - 3x(n – 4)

Question 5:……………………………………………………………….. (4 Marks)

For the following X(z) find:
a) The right-sided signal x[n] (3 Marks)
b) The radius of convergence ROC (1 Mark)

X ( z)  1
11.5z 1  0.5z  2

2 1
X ( z)  
1 z  1 1 0.5z  1
n n
x[n]=2(1) u[n]-(0.5) u[n]

ROC:│z│>1 &│z│>0.5
So │z│>1
