A teacher conducted an experiment to determine if the Team-based instruction (TBI) method or the Individually-guided instruction (IGI) method was more effective for teaching statistics. Fifteen students were taught using TBI and fourteen students were taught using IGI. After several sessions, a 30-item test was administered. An independent t-test was conducted and determined that the difference in mean test scores between the two groups was not statistically significant at the 0.05 level. Therefore, the TBI method was not found to be more effective than the IGI method for teaching statistics.

A teacher wants to find out if the Team-based instruction(TBI) method of teaching


Statistics is more effective than the Individually-guided instruction(IGI) method. Two
classes of approximately equal intelligence were selected. From one class, he/she
considered 15 students with whom he/she used TBI method of teaching and from the
other class, he/she considered 14 students with he/she used the IGI method. After
several sessions, a 30-item test was given. The scores are shown in the following table:

Based on the result of the test, can you say that the TBI method of teaching is more
effective than the IGI method? Use = 0.05.

Step 1:
Ho: The Team Based Instruction method of teaching Statistics is as effective as the
individually Guided Instruction method. (Ho: µTBI = µIGI)
Ha: The Team Based Instruction method of teaching Statistics is more effective than
the Individually Guided Instruction method. (Ha: µTBI > µIGI)

Step 2:
α= 0.05; one-tailed; df = 27; ttab = 1.703

Step 3:
Criterion: Reject Ho if tcomp ≥ ttab.

Step 4:
Decision: Do not reject Ho since tcomp(1.69) < ttab(1.703).
Step 5:
Conclusion: The Team Based Instruction method of teaching Statistics is as effective
as the Individually Guided Instruction method.
