PROBLEM SET (ENGINEERING DATA ANALYSIS)

Show the complete solution for each item on a long bond paper. Submission: March 22, 2023, Wednesday

1. Nine people are going on a skiing trip in 3 cars that will hold 2, 4, and 5 passengers, respectively. In how many ways
is it possible to transport the 9 people to the ski lodge using all cars?
2. A man and his wife invite 8 of their friends to dinner. They are to be sitted around a round table. How many seating
arrangements can be made,
A. if the man and his wife are to sit side by side?
B. If the man and his wife sit opposite each other?
3. A class has 12 boys and 4 girls, suppose 3 students are selected at random from the class, find the probability that
they are all boys?
4. Two cards are drawn in succession from a deck without replacement. What is the probability that both cards are
greater than 2 and less than 8?
5. In a poker hand consisting 5 cards, find the probability of holding 4 hearts and 1 club.
6. A box contains 2 blue socks and 2 white socks. Picking randomly, what is the probability that you will pick 2 socks of
the same color?
7. Find the probability of drawing a heart and a spade in standard deck of 52 cards.
8. Box A contains 5 red marbles and 3 blue marbles and box contains 3 red and 2 blue. A marble is drawn at random
from each box. Find the probability that one is red and one is blue.
9. The probability that A hits a target is 1/3 and the probability that B hits a target is 1/5. They both fire at the target.
Find the probability that one of them hits the target.
10. A real estate agent has 8 master keys to open several new homes. Only 1 master key will open any given house. If
40% of these homes usually left unlocked, what us the probability that the real estate agent can get into specific
home if the agent selects 3 master keys at random before leaving the office?
11. The probability that a patient recovers from a delicate heart operation is 0.9. What is the probability that exactly 5
out of 7 patients will survive?
12. From the past experience, it is known 90% of one year old children can distinguish their mother’s voice from the
voice of a similar sounding female. A random sample of one year old are given this voice recognize test. Find the
probability that all 20 children recognize their mother’s voice.
13. The probability of getting at least two heads when a fair coin is tossed four times is?
14. The probability that Ed hits a target is ¼. He fires 6 times. Find the probability that he hits the target at least once.
15. Determine the value of c so that f(x,y) = cxy represents joint probability distributions of the random variables X and
Y, if the random numbers are x =1,2,3 and y = 1,2,3.
