Continuity and Bernouilli Equations Assignment

This document contains a 10 question multiple choice quiz on fluid flow concepts like continuity and Bernoulli's equation. The questions assess understanding of key relationships like how cross-sectional area and velocity relate based on the continuity equation, how pressure and velocity vary along a streamline according to Bernoulli's equation, and how changing conditions like pipe diameter impact flow properties. Worked examples are shown for questions requiring calculations.

Continuity Equation

1.

Answer: 1. Energy

2.

Answer: 4. Equation of Continuity

3.

Answer: 1. 9:4

Solution:
Equation of Continuity states that the product of the pipe's cross-sectional area (A) and the
velocity of the fluid of the particles(v) at that point are constant.
Given that:
−2
Diameter of pipe 1(𝑑1) =2.5 cm=2.5*10 𝑚
−2
2.5* 10 −2
Therefore, radius of pipe 1 (𝑟1) = 2
= 1. 25 * 10 𝑚
−2
Diameter of pipe 1(𝑑1) = 3. 75𝑐𝑚 = 3. 75 * 10 𝑚
−2
3.75* 10 −2
Therefore radius of pipe (𝑟1) = 2
= 1. 875 * 10 𝑚

𝐴1𝑉1 = 𝐴2𝑉2
Therefore,
𝑣 𝐴2
1
𝑣2
= 𝐴1

𝑣 π𝑟2
2
1
⇒ 𝑣2
= 2
π𝑟1

𝑣 −2 2
1 (1.875*10 𝑚)
⇒ 𝑣2
= −2 2
(1.25*10 𝑚)
𝑣
1 9
⇒ 𝑣2
=4

Therefore, Answer = 9:4

4.

5.

Answer: 1. Increases
Bernoullie’s Equation

6.

Answer: 2. Least pressure and maximum speed

7.

Answer: 4. Bernoulli’s Equation

Answer: 4. Bernoulli’s Equation

8.

Answer:1. Energy

9.

Working is shown

Answer: Option 2. 10
Bernoulli’s Principle states that for a streamlined flow of an ideal liquid in a varying cross-section
tube the total energy per unit volume remains constant throughout the fluid. This means that in a
steady flow, the sum of all forms of mechanical energy in a fluid along a streamline is the same
at all points on the streamline.

Using Bernoulli’s Principle

1 2
⇒𝑃 + 2
ρ𝑣 + ρ𝑔ℎ = 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡
1 2 1 2
⇒ 𝑃1 + 2
ρ𝑣1 + ρ𝑔ℎ1 = 𝑃2 + 2
ρ𝑣2 + ρ𝑔ℎ2
5
Given that Initial velocity(𝑣1) = 0 𝑚/𝑠 , Initial pressure(𝑃1) =3*10 𝑃𝑎, and Final pressure

5
(𝑃2) = 2. 5 * 10 𝑃𝑎

According to Bernoulli’s Equation

1 2 1 2
⇒ 𝑃1 + 2
ρ𝑣1 = 𝑃2 + 2
ρ𝑣2
1 2
⇒ 𝑃1 = 𝑃2 + 2
ρ𝑣2
This equation can be written

2 2(𝑃1−𝑃2)
⇒𝑣2= ρ
5 5
2 2(3*10 𝑃𝑎, −2.5*10 𝑃𝑎) 2 2 2
⇒𝑣2= 3
= 10 𝑚 /𝑠
10
⇒𝑉2=10 𝑚/𝑠
10.
