Group Performance Task Problem Solving

The document provides instructions for a group performance task involving problem solving and reasoning. It includes 5 problems for group members to work on using Polya's method of problem solving. Extra credit will be given for adding different strategies and extension problems. One problem must be chosen for presentation. Solutions are due by a specified date. The problems cover topics like finite geometry, eggs in a basket, party guests departing over time, the Tower of Hanoi puzzle, and the Königsberg bridge problem.

GROUP PERFORMANCE TASK: Problem Solving and Reasoning

Instructions:

Work on these problems using Polya’s method. Assign one problem for each member to work on.
Please refer to the rubric as your guide.
Extra credit will be given if different strategies and extension problems are added in your work.
Choose one problem for presentation.
Submit your final output on or before ________________.

PROBLEM SOLVING TASK 1

Consider the following conditions of a finite geometry:
1. There exist exactly three distinct points in the geometry
2. Two distinct points are on exactly one line.
3. Not all points of the geometry are on the same line
4. Two distinct lines are on at least one point.
How many lines are in the geometry? What kind of figures could be drawn to represent the geometry?

PROBLEM SOLVING TASK 2

There is a basket with a certain number of eggs.

If the eggs are taken from the basket two at a time, only one egg remains.
If the eggs are taken from the basket three at a time, only one egg remains.
If the eggs are taken from the basket four at a time, only one egg remains.
If the eggs are taken from the basket five at a time, only one egg remains.
If the eggs are taken from the basket six at a time, only one egg remains.
If the eggs are taken out seven at a time, no eggs remain.
How many eggs are in the basket?
[Assume the lowest integer solution]

PROBLEM SOLVING TASK 3

By 7 pm all the party guests had arrived but by 8 pm a third of them had departed. By 9 pm a third of
those remaining had also departed. By 10 pm the same happened again and a third of those remaining
had also departed. Finally, the party ended at 11 pm by which time further third of those remaining had
also departed and by 11 pm only 16 guests still remained. How many guests were originally at the party
at 7 pm?

PROBLEM SOLVING TASK 4

TOWER OF HANOI
There are three pegs and sets of rings with different sizes. The objective of the game is to transfer the
tower from one peg to another peg, moving only one peg at a time. But a larger ring must not be placed
on top of a smaller ring. Determine the minimum number of moves in doing so.
Problem Solving Task 5

A famous problem in mathematics, particularly in Graph Theory, is the Königsberg Bridge Problem. In
the 18th century, the small Prussian city of Königsberg, located where the Pregel River divided into two
branches, was faced with a recreational dilemma: Could a person walk over each of the seven bridges
exactly once in a continuous walk through the city?

Consider the following Rubrics when solving problems.
