Course Objectives
The objectives of this course is to
 Understand the fundamentals of wireless sensor networks and its application to critical real time scenarios.
 Study the various protocols at various layers and its differences with traditional protocols.
 Understand the issues pertaining to sensor networks and the challenges involved in managing a sensor network.

After completing this course the student will be able to:


 Identify the components of Wireless Sensor Networks
 Understand various protocols used in Wireless Sensor Networks
 Analyze different routing algorithms adopted in Wireless Sensor Networks
 Deploy WSNs and simulate using network simulators.
 Devise the challenges in providing QoS and understand the concept of energy management.

UNIT-I:
Introduction to wireless sensor networks: Key definitions of wireless sensor networks, unique constraints
and challenges, advantages of wireless sensor networks, driving applications, issues in wireless sensor
networks, issues in design of sensor network, sensor network architecture, data dissemination and gathering.

UNIT-II:
MAC Protocols : Issues in designing MAC protocols for wireless networks, design goals, classification of
MAC protocols, MAC protocols for sensor network, location discovery, quality, other issues, S-MAC, IEEE
802.15.4.

UNIT-III:
Routing Protocols: Issues in designing a routing protocol, classification of routing protocols, table-driven,
on-demand, hybrid, flooding, hierarchical, and power aware routing protocols.

UNIT-IV:
Deployment , Data Processing and Simulation of WSN: Sensor deployment mechanisms,
coverage issues, connectivity, energy consumption of sensor nodes, Issues related to Localization,
Data processing and aggregation, Data storage, security challenges, Node-level Simulators – NS2
and its extension to sensor networks.

UNIT-V:
QoS and Energy Management : Issues and Challenges in providing QoS, classifications, MAC, network
layer solutions, QoS frameworks, need for energy management, classification, battery, transmission power,
and system power management schemes.
