Deciles For Grouped Data: Lesson Plan in Mathematics

This lesson plan is for a 10th grade mathematics class. The students will learn to calculate deciles for grouped data. They will practice this by calculating the 7th and 5th deciles of sample mathematics test score data. Finally, the students will complete a table to calculate the 1st and 7th deciles of additional grouped test score data to assess their understanding. The goal is for students to understand how to determine deciles from grouped frequency data.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 10 QUARTER: 4 WEEK: 2 DAY: 2

COMPETENCY & Calculates a specified measure of position (e.g.90 th percentile) of a set of data.
OBJECTIVES : (M10SP-IVb-1)
 calculate deciles for grouped data

PROCEDURE: A. Preparation
 Routinary Activities:
 Prayer, Checking of Attendance, Reminders
 Simple recall about the measures of position for ungrouped data
B. Motivation

 The teacher divides the students into groups with 6 members and lets them perform "
WHO AM I?"
Mechanics:
1. Each group should be provided with a tag board to write their answer.
2. The group should choose, from the presented symbols, the symbol that corresponds
to the description written on a strip and posted by the teacher on the board.
N LB i cf b fD k
k
3. Each group should raise their tag board 15 seconds after the strip is posted.
4. Every correct word is equivalent to 1 point.

 What do you think are these symbols?

 When can we use these symbols?

C. Presentation

Present this example to the students:

Calculate the 7th decile of the Mathematics Test scores of 50 students.
Scores Frequency
46 – 50 4
41 – 45 8
36 – 40 11
31 – 35 9
26 – 30 12
21 – 25 6

D.Discussion/Abstraction
 What must be determined first before computing the 7th decile?
 What is the D7 class?
 How will you determine the deciles of the grouped data?
 What formula will be used?

Discuss the solution to the example presented.

E. Exercises

Calculate the 5th decile of the Mathematics Test scores of 50 students.

Scores Frequency
46 – 50 4
41 – 45 8
36 – 40 11
31 – 35 9
26 – 30 12
21 – 25 6

F. Generalization

How are deciles for grouped data calculated?

G. Application

Let the students cite some instances where knowledge and skills about the deciles for
grouped data can be applied. Let them justify their answers.

H. Evaluation

Directions: Complete the table and calculate for D 1 and D7 of the Mathematics test scores of
30 students.
Frequency Lower Boundaries Less than
Scores (f) (LB) Cumulative
Frequency (¿ cf )
65-69 3
60-64 8
55-59 6
50-54 7

40-44 2

I. Agreement/Assignment
