Unit 5

The blended learning lesson plan aims to teach students how to throw an accurate leading pass in ultimate frisbee and monitor their own physical activity. Students will learn how to use the MyFitnessPal app to track calories and will wear pedometers during class to measure steps taken while playing ultimate frisbee. The 115 minute class involves an introduction, teacher-directed instruction on using MyFitnessPal, collaborative drills practicing leading passes in groups, independent practice throwing frisbees while tracking steps with pedometers, and a closing discussion of physical activity data.

Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Ultimate Frisbee
Objectives:
Students will be able to: Throw an accurate leading pass to a teammate 50% of the time.
Students will be able to: Learn how to monitor their own physical activity &
State Standards:
HS-1.1 Demonstrate competency and/or refines activity-specific movement skills in two or more of the
following movement forms: aquatics, dance, outdoor pursuits, individual, dual and team sports taught
as lifetime activities.

HS-3.1 Monitor his or her own participation in physical activity (for example, measures through the use
of a pedometer, heart-rate monitor, and/or physical activity log).

Context: Throughout the school year I will have my students’ using pedometers, which are
little devices that track your steps. Now I will introduce the myfitnesspal which is a mobile
app that teaches exercise and diet. In the lessons leading up to ultimate frisbee we would
have done other team sports that have dealt with similar fundamentals. Students will
already understand the concept of defense and moving the “ball” up the field from playing
soccer. I chose ultimate frisbee because for starters it’s fun and its. Great way to have
students running up and down a field. The next lesson would be another team sport, but
the myfitnesspal and working with it will continue for the rest of the year for finals.
Data: Students will be groups in pairs at their own choosing for the warmups. Then I will
make bigger groups to start drilling based on location of students in the gym. For the
games the teams will be based off on physical ability to make the games more fair and fun.
Materials: Pedometer, myfitnesspal (mobile app), cell phones, frisbees

Detailed paragraphs from here on down.

Procedures: (all for a 115 min class)
Introduction (20 min):
After I do my attendance and the beginning of class activity, I will have everyone come together
in a group. Here I will talk about our cognitive, affective, effective, and psychomotor goals for
the day. I will pass out pedometers during the introduction. Then tell my students about the
myfitnesspal app and that we will go deeper into it later. Then I will tell my students what
actively we are doing today and pass out the frisbees.

Teacher Directed (30min):

In teacher directed portion of class the students will sing up and get myfitnesspal on their cell
phones. When introducing this app I myself will have already been using it for at least a week
preferably longer so the students can see what it look like. When signing up you start off by
putting in your own personal fitness goals and a little about your current lifestyle and your
height, weight, age, and gender.
Collaborative (30 min):
In the collaborative part of the class this is where students will practice leading passes. There
will be groups of three going down the gym. The student in the middle starts off leading one of
the other students. The student who caught it throws a leading pass across to the other and during
all this a figure eight rotation will keep a content flow.
Independent Digital (30 min):
During the independent section students will practice on throwing the frisbee back and forth.
Starting off close then gradually backing up as you feel more comfortable. Students will then try
to make throws with curve on it just to strengthen their skills. During this activity students will
be using the pedometer collecting their steps all class
Closure (5 min):
Call everyone in and collect all the equipment. Have the students white down their steps in
the class log that I will be keeping all year. I will then tell my students to keep track of their
calories in the myfitnesspal for the rest of the week.
Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
Pedometer: A pedometer is a small device that clips onto you waist and tracks your
steps. Students subconsciously know that they are wearing the step tracker and that
makes them want to take more steps. This helps students with monitoring their
physical activity. This device is just as easy as walking to use.

Myfitnesspal: myfitnesspal is a mobile app that uses personal information to help

you with exercise and diet management. This app also works to help students
monitor physical activity. This app is very intuitive because you put what you want
to do from gainin weight – to loosign weight and how much. There are free plans to
follow or you can simply just use it to calculate your calories. Myfitnesspal is very
easy to use with a simple set up so everyone can use it.
