In 2003, the Department of Education (DepEd) severely prohibited the usage of cellphones by
students while in class, which is the Order No. 83 that reiterates previous Departmental Orders such
as DO 26, s. 2000, and DO.70, s. 1999. Any elementary or secondary school, whether public or
private, is subject to the ban. The goal of the prohibition was to keep students concentrated on their
studies and to reduce learning interruptions. In this case, parents and teachers working together will
be necessary to fully enforce the ban on cellphone use in class to keep students from engaging in
inappropriate and immoral behavior as well as come up with strategies to teach them how to use cell
phones responsibly. Teachers should advise students on how to responsibly utilize any technology,
including cellphones, and guide them in how to use it in their academic pursuits. On the other hand,
parents should also mentor their kids at home to keep them from engaging in inappropriate
smartphone use that could jeopardize their health and possibly their academic performance.
Furthermore, it has been established that gadgets like smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other
game consoles have a negative impact on students behavior and study habits. Even though they
can be utilized as instruments to improve learning, excessive usage of cellphones and other
technology frequently has negative impacts on students. According to some of the experimental
papers, researchers found that banning mobile phones at school leads to an increase in student
performance. High-performing students can concentrate with or without mobile phones, whereas
low-performing students are more likely to be distracted by them. The findings of their study indicate
that prohibiting mobile phones has many advantages. Additionally, recent experimental studies have
shown that using a phone while performing another task reduces learning and task completion. In
that way, studies suggest that taking notes on a computer may not be as effective as taking notes on
paper. This might be because students are considering how to summarize what they hear rather
than just typing up every word that is stated. However, it has been said that these results do not rule
out the idea that technology, including mobile phones, could be an effective structured teaching aid.
A student's health and long-term social implications could be negatively impacted by disregarding or
misinterpreting the facts, though.
In my opinion, nowadays owning a cell phone is not an option, but a priority. The number of people
owning mobile phones has increased dramatically. While some individuals will agree that giving the
permission for students to have a cellular device in the school is perfectly fine, others do not. I would
say that mobile phones aren't the problem but the students themselves use it in the wrong way while
in class. However, I believe that the no cellphone policy in class is a good move in order for students
to not be distracted. Allowing cell phones in schools is just like giving students the ability to take their
attention elsewhere. Using gadgets while in class could lead to distractions, cheating, social
problems, and illegal activity or usage. I think one of the most common reasons to allow the use of
cell phones in school is for safety purposes. Therefore, the no cellphone policy in school is a way to
make the students more engaged and interactive in class.
