High Tensile AAR Type ‘H’ Tight lock Centre Buffer Coupler (CBC) for
passenger coaches of Indian Railways are according to requirements of IR
specification, described in technical specification C-K009 Rev-01 issued by
Carriage Directorate “Research Design and Standards Organisation” at
Lucknow.
The coupler is designed for mounting on coaches having draft gear pocket to
dimension as specified in technical specification C-K009. Presently LHB design
passenger coaches / conventional conversion type coaches built at Rail Coach
Factory /Kapurthala and conventional conversion type coaches built at Integral
Coach Factory /Chennai are designed to receive these couplers.

The draft gear (item 3 in the arrangement drawing) is a double acting device for
energy absorption during coupling and during service. The device is designed
to fit into the draft gear pocket of the coach and absorbs the dynamic energy in
both draw and buff modes. The stroke in tensile (draw) direction is limited to
58- 5 mm while that in the compressive (buff) direction is 80 mm (max).
P P
Note: Front stoppers and Rear stoppers are to be welded in the draft gear
pocket of coach as per recommendations. Faiveley Transport supplies the UIC
design stoppers that are welded on coaches built at ICF. Stoppers welded on
coaches built at RCF are of LHB design and not in the scope of supply of
Faiveley Transport.

Frame
Compression Springs
Base plate and support plate (item 4 & 5 respectively in the arrangement
drawing) are fastened to the under frame after mounting draft gear in the UIC
pocket of coach. Base plate has a hole for inserting the central pin. A locking
plate is fitted by sliding in between the central pin and base plate to prevent
central pin from falling off. This arrangement facilitates fitment and removal of
coupler head without removing the base plate. It is very important to use only
bolts Grade 10.9 for fastening the mounting plates.
The dimension of draft gear pocket on coach has to conform to that shown in
our arrangement drawings.
Apply adequate grease on all bearing surfaces of draft gear and in the draft gear
pocket before mounting the draft gear.
The coupler parts delivered are ready for mounting to the vehicle under frame.
Mounting procedure/sequence to be followed for installation of coupler on the
vehicle is described below. For lifting the coupler parts a standard hydraulic
lifting table is to be used.
3.2 Mounting of the draft gear
The spring column of the draft gear (refer drawing of draft gear) is pre-
compressed during despatch from the factory by means of the mounting aid
(Pos. 10 and 11 in the drawing) to a dimension of approx. 505 mm between the
front buffing plate and the rear plate. This is important, to bring the draft gear
into the dimension 510 mm in the pocket (between front and back stoppers).
The draft gear is lifted from the underneath into the draft pocket by means of a
standard hydraulic lifting table. The draft gear is then secured in position by
means of two mounting plates (item 4 and 5 of arrangement drawing) - on the
bearing strips of which adequate grease is applied – and 16 bolts of the
specified size. Ensure Bolts are Grade 10.9 and are tightened to the
recommended torque value. Use of thread locking agent is recommended.
FAIVELEY TRANSPORT INDIA LIMITED
Harita, HOSUR – 635109
Holding the coupler head in lifted position (above horizontal), the supporting
device is positioned on the vehicle platform below shank of coupler head before
letting the coupler head to rest on the supporting device. The supporting device
is then fastened using four bolts M20x 50 mm. The bolts are to be tightened to
the recommended torque value. Use of thread locking agent is recommended.
Apply grease on the wear plate of supporting device.
3.5 Mounting of the manual uncoupling device
Mounting aids are factory assembled on the coupler head and draft gear to
enable fitment of coupler on to the vehicle. The same have to be removed after
completing the fitment to enable coupler function as desired.
Mounting aid on draft gear (item 10 and 11 in drawing of draft gear) has to be
removed using a ¾” Ratchet and socket 30 mm (preferably deep socket).
Removing the mounting aid will release draft gear spring column to the
designed preload position and the draft gear will be firmly seated in between
front and back stoppers.

The maintenance of the coupler head in general is described in the AAR manual
“Standard for Periodic Inspection and Maintenance of Passenger Coaches
APTA M-002-98”
- Inspection of automatic coupler head (every 3 month) includes the
following:
- Visually examine the coupler head.
- Coat bare steel areas of coupler head body and knuckle with Molykote
D321R (or equivalent) dry lubricant spray.
CAUTION: Under no circumstances spray lubricate the lock, lock lift lever or
knuckle locking faces as this will allow the lock to be "squeezed" upwards
and may lead to uncoupling!
In addition to the 3 month activities carry out the following every 1 year:
- Jaw gap gauge test (see description below)
- Knuckle profile gauge check (see description below)
- Anti creep check (see description below)
Jaw gap gauge test
- Check for free slack in the contour of the coupler using the
“Inspector Contour Gauge - II” 228943W14.
- If the coupler contour exceeds limit of the gauge, it indicates that
knuckle may need replacement.
- Check with “Condemning limit gauge 228965W14 (old no. D228009-
100), if the gap exceeds limit of the gauge, the knuckle shall be
replaced.
- If this replacement does not bring the coupler into limits, the lock
may be replaced.
- If this replacement does not bring the coupler into limits, the
coupler body must be replaced.

Step 2: With the coupler in the locked position insert a pry bar through the front
of the coupler between the knuckle tail shelf and lock, forcing lock upward.
FAIVELEY TRANSPORT INDIA LIMITED
Harita, HOSUR – 635109
Step 3: Forcing the lock upward as far as it will go engages the top of the toggle
with the bottom of the knuckle tail shelf.
Step 4: Insert a pry bar between the leg of the lock and the front of the lock hole.
Pull toward the front of the coupler to force the lock leg rearward.
Step 5: If the front edge of the toggle is 1/8” or more forward of the rear corner
of the knuckle tail shelf the anti-creep is unacceptable, replace lock lift assembly.

Maintenance of draft gear has to be done together with the inspection of the
whole coupler. The following actions are needed:
- Visually examine the draft gear (every 3 month)
- Check the Miner spring column during the main overhaul (6 to 8 years) for
mechanical damage and pre-load value.
- Replace spring column in case of mechanical damage or change in preload
value.

7 Conclusion
The tight lock coupler as well as the draft gear and other parts are of service
proven design and manufacture. They require less maintenance, less care and
are easy in operation and handling.
For overhauling and repair of couplers SAB WABCO recommends also that the
couplers be to be sent back to our works in Hosur. Our workshop is equipped
with all the facilities to render this service.
With experience in many applications we recommend that users adapt deviated
maintenance frequency and service as required in the particular application and
environment of use in order to get better service performance.
