Read and annotate the speech "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan
Edwards. Fill out the graphic organizer below with the items needed for your analysis
paragraph.

Edwards argues, as his central thesis, that all sinners are deserving of
hell because it is where they belong. Their only hope is to accept Christ's

Using symbolism and metaphorical language, Jonathan Edwards persuades
his crowd to bet on the bad guys in front of angry gods. Picture illustrations as
the first example of a story. In fact, the first sentence of the short story
suggests that Edward used imagery to make his story more compelling. He
didn't say "hell," but used an adjective to describe it further.He substitutes the
wrath of God for hell, repeats it and uses additional adjectives to further
describe it
