Basic Computer Notes 1

Charles Babbage is considered the father of the computer for inventing the Analytical Engine in the 1830s, one of the first general-purpose computers. The Analytical Engine had four main components that functioned similar to modern computers: a central processing unit for calculations, memory to store information, input via punched cards like a keyboard, and output through printing like a printer. Today's computers operate based on the foundational principles established by Babbage in his invention over 150 years ago.

History of Computer

Definition of computer:

A computer is an electronic machine/device, operating under the control of instructions

stored in its own memory that can accept data (input), manipulate the data according to
specified rules (process), produce results (output), and store the results for future use.

- A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to
store, retrieve, and process data. You may already know that you can use a computer to type
documents, send email, play games, and browse the Web. You can also use it to edit or create
spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos.

- Technically, a computer is a programmable machine. This means it can execute a list of

programmed instructions and respond to new instructions that it is given.

History of Computer
- Charles Babbage is known as the "Father of the Computer".

- Today’s computers working principles were provided by an English mathematician

Charles Babbage around 1833's invented a machine called the "Analytical Engine".

- A machine which could calculate and print tables of functions using limited techniques.

- The Analytical Engine had four parts.

1. A mill, which was the section which did the calculations, essentially the CPU;
2. The store, were the information was kept recorded, essentially the memory;
3. The reader, which would allow data to be entered using punched cards, essentially the
keyboard, and
4. The printer.
