Basketball Midterms
Basketball Midterms
Basketball, Boxing, and Beauty Pageant, these are the famous and prideful 3B’s of the Philippines. But when it
comes to sports, basketball was able to captivate every Filipino's heart over time as it is the most played and the
most popular sport for the Filipinos.
Basketball is a team sport that is played between two teams of five players each on a rectangular court, usually
indoors where each team tries to score by tossing the ball on an elevated horizontal hoop and net called a
basket. It is a game of rules. So much so that it’s almost as much about what you can’t do as it is about what you can
do (montage)
But here’s a one question to ask, do you have any idea about the DON’T’s or VIOLATION of this sport?
(Video)
The following video will show you how 8 out of many Basketball Violations works in an actual game.
Held Ball
Held Ball is called when two opponents have one or two hands so firmly upon the ball that neither can gain
possession without undue roughness. It also is called when a player in the frontcourt is so closely guarded that
he cannot pass or try for a goal or is obviously withholding the ball from play.
Double Dribble
The double dribble is exactly what the name suggests…
It's a violation that's whistled when a player makes a controlled dribble, pauses, and then dribbles the
basketball again. Basically, once a dribble has been “picked up” by a player, it’s illegal for them to dribble
again.
Charging
Charging or Charging Foul is a type of foul where an offensive player collides with a defender in a legal
guarding position. It is also when a dribbler uses an elbow and hits a defender, or excessive physical contact by
an offensive post player trying to gain position. Charging results in a personal foul for the dribbler and a loss of
possession for the offensive team. Charging often happens when a defender gets in front of a dribbler driving to
the basket.
Intentional Foul
This is a deliberate act by the defensive player to foul their opponent, knowing that the intentional foul will stop
the play and/or grant their opponent free throws. This is a common strategy, usually done later in the game
when a team is trailing slightly
Back Court
A backcourt violation is an illegal play that the offense commits while in their own half of the court. Teams can
commit backcourt violations by taking too long to cross the mid-court line, or by dribbling or passing into the
backcourt after they cross the mid-court line. There are two ways to commit the said violation, first way is
taking too long to bring the ball up the court. Teams have limited time (usually eight or 10 seconds, depending
on the league) to get the ball past the mid-court line. The other way is to reenter the backcourt after the ball has
already crossed the mid-court line – this move is called an “over-and-back”
Holding
A Holding or “Holding Foul” is a type of personal foul committed when a player grabs or hold their opponent in
a way that stops them from moving freely on the court. It occurs when a defender holds, grabs, or pulls an
offensive player (it doesn’t matter if the offensive player has possession of the ball or not)
Kicking
A kicked ball violation in basketball is the act of purposefully striking the ball with a player's leg or foot. If
a kicked-ball violation is called, the referee will give possession of the ball to the other team. One thing that
makes this rule a bit confusing is that it is not a kicked-ball violation if the basketball accidentally hits a player’s
legs. This leads to many plays where it is difficult to tell whether a player kicked the ball on purpose or the ball
hit their leg by accident.
Travelling
Traveling in basketball is a violation that regularly confuses people. It can be called whenever a player takes
multiple steps without dribbling the ball. This can happen when a player receives the ball (while moving or
stationary) or when a player starts dribbling. When a player stops dribbling, they must establish a pivot foot A
pivot foot may be turned side to side so that the player can move or find better angles, and it does not count as a
travel as long as the chosen pivot foot is not lifted until the ball leaves the player’s hands
Outro
Violation really has a lot of pros and cons, thus, it is important to know it as a player and coach since taking or
committing violations can hurt a team’s chances of winning. And that’s _____ minutes.
