MLA Style Guide

MLA style is a commonly used citation and formatting style for academic writing in the humanities. It involves double spacing, 1-inch margins, and a header with the author's last name and page number. In-text citations include the author's last name and page number in parentheses. The Works Cited page lists all sources alphabetically by author's last name with a hanging indentation and includes publication information like the author, title, publisher and date. Examples of an MLA citation for a book and website article are also provided.

MLA style is a commonly used citation and formatting style in academic writing, particularly in the

humanities. Here is a guide to MLA style:

1. Formatting:

 Use 12-point font, such as Times New Roman

 Use double spacing throughout your paper

 Use 1-inch margins on all sides

 Include a header with your last name and page number in the top right corner of each page

2. In-text citations:

 Use the author's last name and page number(s) in parentheses at the end of a quote or
paraphrase (e.g. (Smith 23))

 If the author's name is already mentioned in the sentence, you only need to include the page
number(s) in parentheses at the end of the quote or paraphrase (e.g. According to Smith, the
"sky is blue" (23))

3. Works Cited page:

 List all sources cited in alphabetical order by the author's last name

 Use hanging indentation for each citation (i.e. the first line is flush with the left margin and
subsequent lines are indented)

 Include the author's name, title of the work, publisher, publication date, and medium of
publication (e.g. Print, Web, DVD, etc.) for each citation

 If a source has no author, begin the citation with the title of the work

 If a source has more than one author, list them in the order they appear on the title page

Here is an example of a book citation in MLA style:

Smith, John. The History of the World. Random House, 2010.

And here is an example of an article from a website:

Jones, Sarah. "The Benefits of Meditation." Mindful Living, 1 May 2022,

www.mindfulliving.com/benefits-meditation.

Research Papers, which is available in most academic libraries and online.
