Intro:
Imagine this, you nd yourself in a room with four doors, if you enter the door
on your right, you start playing Minecraft. Suddenly, there’s a creeper behind
you! You pull out your sword and start ghting it, with your hand. In the left
door, you’re on a plane, looking at the ground below you. You jump off, not
worrying about whether or not your parachute activates. You soar through the
air and land on the ground with no harm to you. Go through the door in front of
you, and you’ll be walking on the rings of Saturn, feeling the rocks on your feet.
The door behind you, you can go swimming underwater, and see the sharks and
sh and any other sea animal imaginable, without surfacing for breath or them
attacking you. You must be wondering, how is this all possible?? Welcome to
the Metaverse! In this speech, I will be telling you what the Metaverse is, how it
can be used, and the advantages and disadvantages.

Paragraph 1: What is the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is the next generation, a 3D version of the internet. It comes
from two words, Meta, and Verse. Meta means beyond, and Verse is short for
"universe". So ‘Metaverse’ basically means “beyond universe”. The Metaverse
is described as a 3D version of the internet as a virtual world that is used
through virtual reality headsets. It can be used for social connections, work,

learning, gaming, shopping, and creating. Things that we would do on screens

will be more natural and vivid. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook says it
might arrive at the end of the decade. Facebook believes in the Metaverse so
much, they changed their name to Meta! That’s some dedication! It also has
things that are only possible virtually, as mentioned previously. Some of the
properties of the Metaverse are: a 3D virtual world, an unlimited number of
users, and an individual sense of presence (which means that you feel like they
are there!) This virtual world can also be a digital economy where users can
create, buy, and sell goods. Things that can be created in the Metaverse are
different services and experiences, and even whole worlds. Most of the
products will be bought with cryptocurrency, which is a digital currency. People
will use avatars to represent themselves in the Metaverse. Avatars are virtual
representations of a character or someone in the real world. In the Metaverse,
there will be a home space, which has parts of your physical home created
virtually. This will be portrayed through an app called Horizon Homes. Your
home space will be created by you, and you can store your pictures and goods
in it. The main headset used for the Metaverse is Oculus Quest 2. Meta invested
1
more than $10 billion on this in 2021, which is a lot of money. This shows Meta’s
dedication to making the Metaverse happen.

Paragraph 2: What can you do in the Metaverse?

So, now you know about what the Metaverse is, but what can you do inside it?
Well, rst things rst, gaming. Gaming is a huge industry, it made $174 billion
in 2021! That’s a lot of money! Lots of games will be in the Metaverse, such as
Minecraft, Roblox, Beat Saber, and many other VR games. The Metaverse will

also have classic games, such as chess and table tennis. Some Meta products
for the Metaverse are Horizon Worlds (where you jump into created worlds with
different things that you can do), Horizon workrooms (where you can call people
and do work), and Horizon Venues (Here you can watch sports, TV, and concerts
with your friends, both from your own homes). Social media is also a huge
industry. It made $103 billion in 2021! Instead of just scrolling through your
phone, you will feel like the person you are talking with is right there. You can
also start exercising in new ways, like boxing or sword ghting. You can even
play against an AI. Man, exercising in the Metaverse sounds fun! People can
also interact with virtual objects that can help people learn in the Metaverse.
For example, people can interact with Jupiter’s great red spot and see what
goes on in that giant storm. You will also be able to teleport to any place, as
well as any time!! You could see ancient structures like the great pyramids get
built! Education will be more real, rather than abstract.

Paragraph 3: Pros and Cons of the Metaverse

Okay. So, now you know what the Metaverse is, and what you can do in it. So
now let’s talk about the Pros and the Cons. Let's start with some Pros. The
Metaverse has some really good advantages. Our brains register the
experiences in VR as real, so it could help people if they are staying at home
because they are disabled, or in isolation for COVID-19. The Metaverse would
also be good for the environment. People won’t have to drive to work or drive to

school. Buuuuut (dang it), there are also some disadvantages. In the Metaverse,
people could lose touch with what's real. You can create your avatar, and it
doesn’t have to look anything like you. This problem is bad enough with video
game addiction today. The Metaverse would be a million times worse than
playing it on a TV screen. This would affect everyone, not just gamers, but
everyone around the world. The Metaverse can also pretend that things you
don’t like exist. So, if you hated COVID, the Metaverse will pretend that it won’t
exist. Even what someone says may not be what that person is saying. It could
just be what Meta wants you to hear because it will keep you on the Metaverse.
Another problem about the Metaverse is moderation. Like, moderation of text
posts is easy, you can just scan for anything you wouldn’t want to see. If Meta
would want to moderate the Metaverse like moderating Facebook, they will
have to be incredibly invasive. Meta would have to monitor everything about
your avatars, such as tattoos, or the writing on your clothing.

So, what do you think about the Metaverse? Do you think we should use it or
not use it? My opinion is that we should use the Metaverse. Yes there are a lot
of cons, and many reasons not to use it, but there are so many amazing
possibilities. Another way to think of it, is that would you not use the internet?
Sure, when it came out, people were worried about the internet too, but, now?
You can’t live without it! Thank you for listening to my speech, and I hope you
learned something from it!
