ABSTRACT
There is still a lack of empirical research on how working adults themselves view social
media, especially as a knowledge resource or how they rely upon it, despite mounting
evidence of the effects of social media on adolescents’ mental health. A secondary research
was conducted through various different media such as article report, videos and research
thesis in order to find if it really impact working adults in different aspect. Regarding the
findings above, social medias really impact working adults astronomically but in both
different way which is good and bad at the same time based on how they use and
perceivesocial media. These issue is a great means for students that will be working adults in
the future so that they can exposed to reality and outcomes in using social media when
working in acompany or organisation.

BACKGROUND
The power of knowledge. Although everyone is familiar with this adage, few people are
aware of how empowering social media has become. Anyone online is empowered by social
media’s unlimited information flow to expand their knowledge base. Social media plays an
unquestionable role in today’s environment. Our culture, economy, and overall worldview are
all significantly influenced by the media. Social media is a brand-new platform that allows
users to connect, relate to, and mobilise for a cause as well as exchange ideas, ask for help,
and give direction. Social media has broken down communication barriers, provided
decentralised communication channels, and given everyone the opportunity to participate in
democratic discourse, even those living in oppressive nations. This media channel welcomes
a wide range of unplanned, formal, casual, writings, both scholarly and others, to thrive It
enables groups with shared interests, like outside of class, students should collaborate on
group projects. It encourages innovation and teamwork with a variety of commenters on
many topics, such as education, the monetary system, politics, racism, health, relationships,
etc.

different threats such as cyberbullying, mental health issue, online fraud and scam, fake news
and etc. In the case for working adults privacy breaching, inefficancy in work,
procrastinating, company data being infiltrate etc. Are now and arising issue.

METHODOLOGY

The researcher has done both primary and secondary research on the social media impact to
society. The main literatures in the context of this study are those produced by the original
writers, whereas the secondary literatures—of which are _ were reviewed—are those that
have been examined by other literatures. The review's conclusions showed that working
adults on social media can be categorised into a few aspect: i) Working adults must know the
risk and advantage of using social media ii) Working adults need to really think carefully
before posting something on social media iii) Working adults must make sure that their social
media account are secure and their data are protected

2
Finding Job Oppurtunity
Based on Job Statistic 2022, we can see here that working adults find jobs through 6 sources.
59% of them got job from online job boards, 46% from friends, 39% from social media, 33%
from employer career sites, 23% from professional connections, and only 23% from job fair.

(Figure 1)

From this infographic we can see most of them find job digitally and the online job boards
with the most percentage is actually something that you can get from social media. As for the
second most, which is friends, we cannot fathom the fact that their friends may find about the
information from social media. Social media like LinkedIn and Facebook rank 3 with 39%
and actually is a big number. (Noted: The survey let people to choose more than 1 option is
because the percentage does not add up to 100%.)

Finding Inspiration and Ideas

As for the next popular social media among working adults especially in creative industry,
Pinterest is the best. Statistical report from Pinterest website itself stated that 89% of users on
Pinterest actually are finding inspiration (Business Pinterest). 25% of social media marketers
also are using Pinterest as one of their market research and strategy. (Statista)

(Figure 2)

Tracking Business Trend and Strategies

In 2010-2012 social media user exceeding quota more than non-social media user in terms of
business engagement meaning their business get more audience in social media than
traditional marketing. (Forbes).

(Figure 3)
IBM also succeed in implementing business in social media engagement and get 400%
increase in sales (IBM report). According to the business unit executive for inside sales
marketing at IBM North America Douglas Hannan, “We really wanted to make social selling
part of the basic way we sell,” She also says," We didn’t want our reps spending five minutes
a day tweeting and then going back to their ‘real’ job.”

(Figure 4)

5
Social Media Screening
However social media also came in risk, based on the 2020 Manifest Recruitment Survey we
found out an infographic that says 90% of employers thought that social media screening is
really important when evaluating job applicants.

(Figure 5)

Some of them is screen through social media by using search engine such Instagram, Twitter,
YouTube and Google. Avoiding from posting thing that can bring red flag to employers such
as, political issue, illegal drugs use, hate speech, illicit content, badmouthing others, and
racism. (SmallBizTrends). It is proven through real-life accident when James Gunn, ex-
director of Marvel Studios had been fired regarding post on social media more than decade
ago about sensitive content.

6
(Figure 6)

Leads to Procrastinanting
According to data by Editor’s choice 27% of US citizens for work means. 30% use them as a
means to take a mental breakdown. 51% of them actually use social media in workplace and
98% use it for personal purpose.

(Figure 7)
In another pie chart, it shows how much time workers spends on social media. Average time
for workers to use social media are at 1-15 minutes (18.7%). And surprisingly, there are
actually worker that spend their time for social media for nearly 120+ minutes (9.40%).
Combining those who use social media more than 30 minutes we got nearly 30 % workers
that spend their time on social media. This can lead to procrastinating and inefficiency in
working and will not leave a good impression to employers.

8
( Figure 8)
Open Door to Cyber Attacks
As of December 2022, investment fraud is the costliest form of cybercrime, with an average
of $70,811 lost per victim. It is clear that the rate and cost of data breaches are increasing.
Since 2001, the victim count has increased from 6 victims per hour to 97, a 1517% increase
over 20 years. (AAG-IT). Regarding those issues, through a video on YouTube with Title
CISCO-Anatomy of IoT Attack, we can see how hackers can infiltrate to our company
network by only searching for the staff social media.

(Figure 9)

10

From all the findings above it can be concluded that social media on working adults is based
on the individual itself. If one’s can take the risk and advantages to enjoy social it is
considered a yes for working adults to had social media. However, if one’s think to separate
your working and private life without wanting others to know it, be sure to hide it properly
and not to be suspicious.
