Load characteristics
11. A long shunt compound Generator has armature, series and shunt field resistances are 0.8 Ω, 0.2
Ω and 50 Ω respectively and supplied a load of 5 kW at 230 V. Calculate generated EMF in
armature.
12. A DC compound motor takes a line current of 50A at 500V. The resistances are Ra = 0.05 Ω, Rse
= 0.03 Ω and Rsh = 250 Ω. Find the induced EMF, power developed in armature and power
delivered to load, if contact drop is 1 V per brush. Neglect armature reaction. Assume short shunt
connection.
13. A 4 pole DC shunt generator with a shunt field resistance of 100 Ω and an armature resistance of
1 Ω has 378 wave connected conductors in its armature. The flux per pole is 0.02 Wb. If a load
resistance of 10 Ω is connected across the armature terminals and the generator is driven at 1000
rpm, calculate the power absorbed by the load.
14. In 400 volts, DC compound generator, the resistance of the armature, series and shunt windings
are 0.1 Ω, 0.05 Ω and 100 Ω respectively. The machines supply power to 20 numbers resistive
heaters, each rated 500 watts, 400V. Calculate the induced emf and armature currents when the
generator is connected in short shunt. Assume a brush contact drop to be 2 volts per brush.
15. In a 110V compound generator, the resistances of the armature, shunt and the series windings are
0.06 Ω, 25 Ω and 0.04 Ω respectively. The load consists of 200 lamps each rated at 55 W, 110
V. Calculate the total electromotive force and armature currentwhen the machine is connected (A)
long shunt and (B) short shunt. Ignore armature reaction and brush drop.
16. A 10 pole DC generator with 800 wave connected conductors and running at 600 rpm supplies a
load of 15 Ω at a terminal voltage of 240 V. The armature resistance is 0.28 Ω and field resistance
is 240 Ω. Determine the armature current, the induced EMF and the flux per pole.
Armature reaction
17. An 8 pole, 250 V lap connected DC shunt generator has 1408 armature conductors and it delivers
240 A on full load. If the brush lead is 8.18° mechanical, calculate the demagnetizing and cross
magnetizing ampere turns per pole.
18. An 8 pole, wave connected DC shunt generator delivers an output of 240 A at 500 V. The armature
has 1400 conductors and a 150 commutator segments. If the brushes are given a lead of 5 segments
from no load neutral axis, estimate demagnetizing and cross magnetizing Ampere Turns per pole.
19. A 4 pole 50 kW, 250 V wave wound shunt generator has 400 armature conductors and 100
commutator segments. Brushes are given a lead of 4 commutator segments. Calculate the
demagnetizing amp- turns per pole, if shunt field resistance is 50 Ω. Also, calculate extra shunt
field turns per pole to neutralize the demagnetization.

Parallel operation
21. Two shunt generators each with an armature resistance of 0.01 Ω and field resistance of 20 Ω run
in parallel and supply a total load of 4000 A. The EMFs of two generators are respectively 210 V
and 220 V. Calculate the busbar voltage and output of each machine.
22. Two shunt generators operating in parallel deliver a total current of 250 A. One of the generators
is rated 50 kW and the other 100 kW. The voltage rating of both the machines is 500 V and have
regulations of 6 percent (smaller one) and 4 percent. Assuming linear characteristics, determine
(A) the current delivered by each machine (B) terminal voltage.
23. Two DC shunt generators A and B are operated in parallel to supply a load current of 300A.
Generator A: Ra, Rsh and EMF are 0.05 Ω, 30 Ω and 400V respectively.
Generator B: Ra, Rsh and EMF are 0.03 Ω, 25 Ω and 380V respectively.
Calculate the output of each generator.
