Parental Expectations and Its Relation To Academic Stress Among School Students

The document discusses several studies on the relationship between parental expectations, stress, and academic performance in students. It finds that while some level of stress is normal and can be motivating, excessive parental expectations can place too much stress on students and negatively impact their academic achievement and well-being. Stress from "non-traditional" home environments like stepfamilies is also linked to worse school performance compared to students from intact families. The length of time living with "non-traditional" siblings and the student's gender may modify these effects. Schools should help students manage stress through counseling and tailored programs to support their academic success and development.

Parental Expectations and Its Relation to Academic Stress among School Students

According to the study of Subramani Chellamuthu about Parental

Expectations and Its Relation to Academic Stress among School Students(2019), Everyone wants to be

successful in their life, hence stress is unavoidable as optimum level of stress is essential to function

effectively towards any goal (2019) On the other hand, stress turns into distress when it exceeds the

optimal level and needs to be treated.

Every person may experience stress once in their lifetime. Stressors, also

known as causes of stress, can originate from all different backgrounds. Different types of stress, such as

marital stress, familial stress, work-related stress, and academic stress, are categorized using a variety of

criteria scholastic stress is a form of emotional suffering related to some predicted annoyance brought on

by academic failure. tress has become part of students’ academic life due to the various internal and

external expectations placed upon their shoulders (2019). School kids experience stress due to external

demands such as parental attitude and excessive parental expectations Parents have high standards for

their children's education, expecting them to do well in all of their classes and to be the class top student.

Most parents of students in the 10th through 12th grades expect them to do well in school because it is a

prerequisite for higher education.

Also this study says that Parents play a big role in how their children behave in

a variety of spheres of life. Molnar found that parents’ education and home environment play a significant

role in child’s academic achievement. Though parental involvement leads to better academic

achievement (Molnar, 1979) stress among pupils is caused by parents' excessive expectations Parents

frequently set unattainable goals, which can cause adolescents to act out dramatically by becoming

stressed, depressed, or even committing suicide.

“Non-traditional” siblings and the academic outcomes of adolescents

Moreover according to the study of Kathryn Harker Tillman, (2008) The

connection between academic disadvantage and stepfamily living. "Non-traditional" sibling

compositions are associated with worse grades and greater levels of school-related behavior

issues after controlling for demographic and family background features. As family members

live together, the disadvantage associated with "non-traditional" siblings grows or remains

constant. Controlling for sibling composition alleviates the disadvantage encountered by youth in

married stepfamilies and explains a portion of the disadvantage suffered by those in cohabiting

stepfamilies. Thus, the complexity, ambiguity, and stress that comes with having "non-

traditional" siblings living in the same home appears to be part of what makes stepfamily life

deleterious to youth scholastic performance. These findings emphasize the need of taking into

account the composition of a young person's entire residential family unit.(2008)

To summarize, we know relatively little about the exact ways in which the types

of siblings present in the family influence teenagers' academic results. The presence of co-

resident step- and/or half-siblings complicates and ambiguizes family connections, which can

strain family dynamics and contribute to increased stress. As a result, adolescent well-being may

suffer dramatically. The length of time spent living with "non-traditional" siblings, as well as the

gender of the adolescent involved, may, however, modify the relationship between sibling

composition and academic outcomes.

The Effects of Stress on Academic Performance

Furthermore Miyoba and Friday found out in their research “The Effects of Stress

on Academic Performance among High School Students in Lusaka” (2022) Findings show that to a large

extent, stress affects students negatively. Therefore, it is vital for schools to understand the various

sources of stress among their students and this implies putting effective stress overcoming measures in

place such as enabling counsellors to create awareness and tailor-made intervention programs that are

relevant to students’ academic success and general life.

When presented with a challenge, adolescents can effectively manage stress by

having outlets that are appropriate for them. They should also be allowed to express their concerns or

worries with their parents or peers. They should devise a life goal approach for successfully managing

their time and academic work. Students should be confident in their academic work and submit their

homework on time to avoid stress when deadlines approach. Another step that can be implemented is for

schools to focus on kids' career trajectories in order to assist them in navigating their way into what they

want to study when they begin their higher education. Adolescents should be encouraged as well.

Negative Effects of Parental Stress on Students

Parental pressure is the emotional stress parents tend to put on their
children and is often related to academic success, cultural and social standards, and other
factors. The leading cause of parental pressure comes out of concern for the welfare of
their children and their employment. Another factor is the parent’s past goals they
couldn’t achieve; therefore, they try to employ the same dream in their children, leading
to confusion for the kid. The outcome of these actions is, more often than not, unhealthy
on a large scale(2012)

Although the pressure is mostly motivated by good intentions, parents

can sometimes go above and beyond what is appropriate for pupils. As a student, your
child will continually seek your approval. Even a little disappointed look might drive
them into a negative mental condition; they will begin to doubt their talents, which will
gradually develop to dread, anxiety, and other mental diseases. Consider the
consequences of excessive pressure. Constant parental pressure creates defensive
attitudes in children. They might develop unhealthy habits, injuries, and mental illnesses
and grow into them. You should be able to identify your child’s abilities and advise them
on how to develop their talents. Success is inevitable if you provide your child the
necessary support to pursue their goals in whatever profession they choose without
creating a fear of failure.(2022)
