I Scope
This specification defines the requirements for grading and quality of fine and coarse
normal weight aggregate (other than lightweight or special purpose aggregate) for use in
concrete.
II Conflicts and Deviations
A. Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the
Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
B. Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302
and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department of
Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
III References
The selection of material and equipment, and the design, construction, maintenance, and
repair of equipment and facilities covered by this specification shall comply with the
latest edition of the references listed below, unless otherwise noted.

IV Modifications to ASTM C33
Aggregate stockpiles shall be arranged and used in a manner to avoid excessive

segregation and to prevent contamination with other materials or with other sizes of like
aggregate. The ground or foundation on which aggregates are stockpiled shall be

sloped, hard and free of foreign materials, which could cause contamination of
aggregates. The ready mixed concrete supplier shall handle aggregates in a manner to
minimize segregation and accumulation of fines.
The following paragraph numbers refer to ASTM C33/C33M - 13, “Standard Specification
for Concrete Aggregates” which is part of this specification. The text in each paragraph
below is an addition, exception, modification, or deletion to ASTM C33/C33M as noted.
Paragraph numbers of ASTM C33/C33M not appearing below shall apply without any
modification. Paragraph numbers not appearing in ASTM C33/C33M are new paragraphs
to be inserted in numerical order.
4.1.1 (Addition) Supplier Qualification Requirements: The Purchaser shall inspect,

sample and test all sources of aggregates prior to purchase. Samples tested at
the first inspection will determine the acceptability of the supplier's source of
aggregate. The first inspection shall enable the supplier to be considered as a
potential source of coarse aggregate.
Purchasing Requirements: A minimum stockpile of 500 m³ of each aggregate

size shall be committed by the suppliers and accepted. No additional
materials shall be permitted to be stockpiled thereon. Aggregate stockpiles
which have been committed and accepted shall be designated for Purchaser.
No equipment shall operate on the stockpile. Samples shall be taken at
random and at a frequency of at least one sample per 200 m³ of aggregate to
be shipped, but not less than one sample per month. Any material failing to
comply with the specification shall be rejected.
The ground on which the aggregates are stockpiled shall be hard and free
of foreign materials. Loading shall be done by an experienced operator.
The loader bucket shall not cut into the underlying foundation on which the
aggregates are stockpiled.
4.4 (Addition) Aggregates shall be obtained from the same source.
5.2 (Addition) Manufactured sand shall be washed prior to batching with water
that contains no more than 3500 parts per million (ppm) of total dissolved
solids (TDS) and 1000 ppm of chlorides.
7.1 (Modification) Delete this paragraph in its entirety and substitute the following:
The limits of deleterious substances in fine aggregates shall conform to

Table A of this specification.
7.3 (Deletion) Delete this section in its entirety and substitute the following:
Fine aggregates shall not contain any materials that are deleteriously reactive
with the alkalies in the cement in an amount sufficient to cause excessive

expansion of mortar or concrete.
8.1 (Exception) Only magnesium sulfate shall be used for the soundness test.
8.2 (Deletion) Delete this paragraph in its entirety.
11.1 (Deletion) Delete this paragraph in its entirety and substitute the following:
The limits of deleterious substances in coarse aggregates shall conform to

the requirements shown in Table A of this specification.

Commentary Note:
Coarse aggregates can be cleaned from dust in order to meet Table A by

water, vacuum suction or air blast. Total dissolved solids in the washing water
shall not exceed 3500 ppm and chlorides shall not exceed 1000 ppm.
11.2 (Modification) Delete this section in its entirety and substitute the following:
Coarse aggregate shall not contain any materials that are deleteriously
reactive with the alkalies in the cement in an amount sufficient to cause
excessive expansion of mortar or concrete.
