Everyday, from all around the worls,
there have mllion tones of solid waste
that have been thrown into river, lake,

About 420 billion m3 (cubic meters) of
sewage are discharged into rivers,
lakes and seas around the world every
year, polluting 5.5 trillion m3 of fresh
water, which is equivalent to more
than 14% of the total global runoff.

YANGTZE RIVER
The Yangtze River, called Jiangshui or
Dajiang in ancient times, referred to as
Jiang, is the longest river in Asia and the
third longest river in the world. It is also the
longest river in the world that is completely
within the territory of a country. Its total
length is 6,300 kilometers. Dandong Peak
crosses the southwest, central and eastern
parts of China, and merges into the East
China Sea in Shanghai. The Yangtze River
Basin covers one-fifth of the land area of
mainland China and supports one-third of
the population of mainland China. The
Yangtze River Economic Belt is also one of
the largest economic belts in China.

ISSUE AND
AFFECT
WATER POLLUTION AT
YANGTZE RIVER
In 2017, The Yangtze River's banks were contaminated by
millions of tonnes of untreated garbage, including slag from
steel manufacturing, that Shagang, China's largest privately-
owned steel company, placed in landfills.

The company, which produced 38 million tones of steel, also

didn't fix emissions standards violations at its boilers and
coking coal plant, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment
said.

As a large private enterprise group that has made important

contributions to the development of the local economy, it has
not paid enough attention to the smoke and dust pollution
issues assigned by the Central Environmental Protection
Supervision Group. Industrial solid waste such as steel slag is
randomly piled up on the banks of the Yangtze River, polluting
the surrounding soil and water bodies, and threatening the
safety of the Yangtze River's ecological environment.

IMPACT 1
ENDANGER HUMAN HEALTH
73% of the main rivers in the lower reaches of the
Yangtze River are polluted, 85% of the polluted rivers
in Jiangsu embankment, and 90% in Shanghai, The
Jiangnan Canal has been polluted throughout. Most
urban water sources have been polluted to varying
degrees, and it is difficult to find suitable drinking
water sources in cities such as Jiaxing and Changshu.

Water pollution directly affects the living environment of

human beings and damages human health. A variety of
pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites spread
through polluted water bodies, causing infectious
diseases that have been designed to be controlled in
some areas to rise again, and even cause local
epidemics.
IMPACT 2:
ENDANGER
BIODIVERSITY

The natural assets of the Yangtze River are declining year by The deterioration of the water
year, and water pollution is one of the reasons for the environment has changed the original
reduction. For example, shad and saury, which are abundant living environment of organisms, and
in the river section below Nanjing, have decreased by more the biodiversity has been greatly
than 80% compared with the 1970s. The spawning grounds affected. The number of many animals
and fishing grounds of the four major domestic fishes in the and plants has been greatly reduced,
main stream have shrunk, and some seriously polluted river and some rare species are facing
sections have even lost fish and shrimp. extinction.
IMPACT 3:
ENDANGER THE RESOURCE
VALUE OF WATER BODY
Water pollution affects the functional use of
water and weakens the landscape and
entertainment functions of water. Many
natural baths have disappeared, and some
scenic spots have been inferior due to water
pollution. The presence of certain toxic and
hazardous substances also affects fisheries
and agricultural uses of the water.
Part 3:

WHO SHOULD
RESPONSIBLE?
A component department in charge of ecological monitoring and environmental
Ministry of protection in the State Council, People's Republic of China (PRC).

Ecology and The Ministry of Ecology is mainly responsible for formulating and organizing the
implementation of eco-environmental policies, plans and standards, being
Environment of responsible for the monitoring and enforcement of eco-environment, supervising

the People's and managing pollution prevention and control, nuclear and radiation safety, and
organizing the central environmental protection inspectors.

China Responsible for establishing and improving the basic system of ecological
environment.
Responsible for supervising and managing the implementation of national
emission reduction targets.
Responsible for the supervision and management of environmental pollution
prevention and control.
To guide and supervise the ecological protection and restoration work.
Jiangsu Shagang Group Co.
Shagang Group is a listed company. In 2017, its steel output
exceeded 30 million tons, and its annual sales exceeded 200
billion yuan, but it failed to better assume its environmental
responsibility. For this type of enterprise, Suzhou City and
Zhangjiagang City mainly adopted "escrow by penalty". After
the end of the first round of central environmental protection
inspectors, they didn't urge the enterprise to make a thorough
rectification, so that the problem of smoke and dust emission
remained unsolved for a long time...

Shagang Group's steel slag was stored so close to the Yangtze River for a long time, and the lack of
necessary pollution prevention and control facilities not only exposed the outstanding problems existing in
Shagang Group's environmental management, but also reflected the weak environmental supervision of the
local party committee and government, which resulted in escrow by penalty. In view of the environmental
pollution problem of Shagang Group and the local party committee's government's inaction and slow action in
environmental protection, the inspector group will make progress in investigation and deal with it according to
laws and regulations.

PERSONAL
OBSERVATION
Strengthen the construction of
the legal system and formulate
regulations on the protection of
water resources in the Yangtze
River. To curb water pollution at
the source and ensure the
sustainable use of water
resources in the Yangtze River.
Strengthen river
basin supervision
and management.
Implement unified
detection and
management of
urban sewage
outlets entering the
river.
Establish nature reserves,
protect endangered animals
and plants in watersheds, and
protect and restore biodiversity
in watersheds.
Part 6:

CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
The Yangtze River is the most important water resource for China's cities. Water pollution on the
Yangtze River has caused significant inconvenience to both people and the environment. It
affected the local economy, decreased the income of domestic residents, and polluted the water
resource that is used daily by people.

Except for aquatic life, the Yangtze River becomes

more important because it provides a water resource
for wildlife species such as the snow leopard, giant
panda, and Siberian white cranes. Pollution of the
water affects not only the aquatic ecosystem but
also wildlife species.

The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia, the

third-longest in the world, and the longest in the
world to flow entirely within one country. We protect
it not for our own benefits but for the whole planet.
