Writing as a Process
Writing consists of more than just
drafting a paper but rather as three
stages that Murray calls pre-writing,
writing, and rewriting.

This conception of writing as a process

has very important implications: "That
writing if first and foremost a social
activity, that the act of writing can be a
means of learning and discovery"
(Olson, 1999).
Three Stages
of the Writing Process
Pre-writing Stage
1. 1 Choosing a topic and limiting it
"Everything that takes place before the first
draft."
Begins with brainstorming exercises and
preliminary research to select a topic.
A quick survey of related sources on the
general topic is helpful in limiting the topic
to a more specific area of study.
Student writers should ask the following
practical questions like:
Practical Questions
What are the objectives (of the course or
the professor) that need to be met by this
paper?

What are my objectives in writing this

paper?

1. 2 Asking research questions and establishing the significance of
one's research
Barrage the specific topic with questions to come up the essay's
main research question.
The 4 W's should be used as background research questions.

Here are some examples of the questions:

What does the "ting-tingi system" mean? What is the nature of
tingi?
Who exactly practice this?
When did this practice begin?
Where is this practiced? In what context/s?
1. 3 Composing a Thesis Statement
This is the explicit statement of
what will be the paper's central
idea, or argument, which is the
main assertion that will be
supported by the entire essay.
The tentative answer to the
research question.
1. 4 Preparing the Writing Outline
Decide what points you would like to discuss during your
paper.
Put your points in logical, numerical order so that each point
connects back to your main point.
Write possible transitions between paragraphs.
1. 5 Doing the Research and Finding Credible Sources
Gathering information about the topic and supporting
details about it.
Finding credible and accurate sources that can support the
topic and give more emphasis.
Examples are conducting a survey or researching on legible
internet websites.
Writing Stage
"The act of producing a first draft." ;
"fastest" part of the writing process according
to Donald Murray (1972)
According to educators Murray Suid and
Wanda Lincoln (1989) it is like making a
sketch for painting.
Included in your draft that must already have
the complete parts of your text, is your careful
selection of the transitions to ensure a
smooth flow of your thoughts.
Re-writing Stage
Involves "researching, rethinking,
redesigning, rewriting- and finally, line-by-
line editing, the demanding, satisfying
process of making every word right " (Murray,
1972).
1. Is the title appropriate and effective?
2. Is the first Paragraph interesting and
compelling? Is it related to the topic?
3. Does each paragraph support the essay's
main idea.
4. What needs to be added, omitted, or
reorganized?
At the end of the paper, student must list all the resources
that have been cited or mentioned. For most sources, the
following information required: author's name, title of the
text, publication, place, publisher, and publication date.

Some example styles for the referencing sources are

American Psychological Association or APA. which
emphasizes the author.

The purpose of writing a document essay is to

demonstrate a student's authority on a topic through
his/her knowledge of research material ( Robert and
Turgeon)
