2. Create a short quotation about the importance of
Philippine opera in the history of Philippine music art.
3. Appreciate the importance of Philippine opera in a
theater both local and international events.

Philippine Opera
Opera
 Is a dramatic story told through song.
 Considered as the most complete art form, combining all the elements
of art; words, music, drama and dance.

Orchestra - a group of musicians who play usually classical


music together and who are led by a conductor.

Brief History of Opera


Opera- it started in Italy more than 400 years ago at the end of the 16 th century
and soon spread throughout the rest of Europe.
Philippine Opera
 started during the middle part of 19th century.
 First introduce in the Philippine in 1878 through the Zarzuela.
Zarzuela
 a Spanish art and music form that involves spoken and sung words.
 It was eventually called Sarswela after adapting to local culture and
later on known as Local Opera.

Local Theaters

1.Theatro Zorilla
 Also known as ʺDulaang Zorillaʺ sa Maynila.
 A prominent theatre in the Philippines.
 The theater where the first Filipino Opera ʺSandugong
Panaginipʺ was presented
 Name after Jose Zorilla, a Spanish poet and playwright.
 Has a seating capacity of 900 people and was officially
opened an August 17, 1983 and served as the venue for
Spanish language and tagalog language stage performances.
 Maintained its activity until year 1970, moment that
closed it’s doors. At that time, cinema had become the
main occupation of the theater.
 Acquired by the City Council in 1986 and has been a
reference in the cultural and social activity of the city since
that moment.

House  The country’s most popular theater in the 1900ʾs
 It gained the title ʺThe Theater with a Historyʺ and
famously held the stage for important political,
historical and cultural events in its glory day.
 Initially designed for a different kind of entertainment:
cycling event and then was remodeled into a theater
 It had a sorry state that it looked like a warehouse
than a theater and also suffered greater damage due
to floods an was also engulfed in flames leaving only
the basement theater intact.
 In grand turn of events, Teodoro was able to rebuild
the theater after the was and it reopened in 1950 and
was christened ʺThe theater with a historyʺ.

Metropolitan Theater - has been a sign of decay after it was


closed in 1996.
