MTAP2 Module

Introduction
The MTAP2 module allows facilities to test energized AC electric motors and generators,
without opening the MCC or switchgear doors. The voltage at the port, where the user
connects the test equipment, is less than 50V to comply with the latest OSHA and NFPA 70E
guidelines for safe electrical work.

MTAP2 modules can be used with any PdMA P-Series or H-Series (black case) EMAX and
MCEMAX portable testers. A custom cable connects the MTAP2 port to the tester.

MTAP2 modules use UL and CSA recognized components, and were designed to meet UL
508, TIL 31 and CSA 22.2 Num. 14-05 standards.

Please review this entire document before installing and testing with the MTAP2 module.

Installation Overview
The following steps provide an overview of the installation process. Detailed installation
information is provided in the remainder of this document.

1. Follow ALL electrical and other safety standards at your facility.

2. Gather all materials and tools needed for installation.
3. De-energize the motor and perform LOCKOUT, TAG-OUT.
4. Determine mounting location for MTAP2 port and module.
5. Mount MTAP2 circuit board inside switchgear.
6. Mount MTAP2 port to front of switchgear door and connect to MTAP2 module.
7. Connect 3 phases of voltage and ground to MTAP2 module.
8. Install CT’s and connect the CT lead wires to the MTAP2 module terminal strip.
9. Follow plant safety procedures and restart the motor.
10. Connect the EMAX tester to the MTAP2 port, and run an EMAX Power test to confirm
installation.

EMAX – Motor Test Port Installation Instructions

Please carefully read all of the instructions before attempting to install the MTAP2.

WARNINGS:
1. Compare the input voltage rating on the MTAP2 circuit board to the system voltage on
the input of the MTAP2. Depending on the MTAP2 configuration, the specific input
voltage should be the following: 120V, 240V, 480V, or 600V at 50/60 Hz.
2. Verify that all circuits are de-energized before installing this device.
3. Follow your facility’s safety procedures when working with electrical circuits.
4. Remember, the MTAP2 shall NOT be used for offline testing. When performing
offline testing, be sure to disconnect the MTAP2 test cable from the tester and follow
the IEEE 43-2000 standard.
5. If the MTAP2 module is used or installed in a manner not specified by PdMA, the
protection provided by the equipment may be impaired.
6. MTAP2: Temperature Rating: 80° C
Relative Humidity: 90 % non-condensing
7. Primary Fuse Ratings: Fast-Acting 1/10 TO 30A, 600Vac (or less), Interrupting
Rating: 100,000A RMS

Mounting the Circular Connector to the MCC Door:

The nameplate containing the circular connector mounts to the MCC door and requires a 1.5-
inch outside diameter hole and four 0.120-inch diameter holes (#31 drill bit).
Instructions:
1. Identify a suitable location on the MCC to install the Motor Test Port. Refer to the
following pages for mounting constraints.
2. Use the template on page 7 to locate the center hole and four mounting holes.
3. Drill or punch a 1.5-inch outside diameter hole where shown.
4. Attach the circular connector to the back of the nameplate using the supplied machine
screws and nuts.
5. Pass the DB15 end of the cable through the 1.5-inch hole from the front of the MCC
and use the nameplate as a template to check the location of the four mounting holes.
6. Use a #31 drill bit to drill the four mounting holes.
7. Use the supplied machine screws and nuts to attach the nameplate to the MCC door.
Mounting the Circuit Board:
The circuit board is designed to be DIN rail mounted (optionally mounted using ‘Z’ feet).

DIN Mount:
1. Use the six supplied thread lock screws to attach the DIN rail mounts to the circuit
board.
2. Snap the circuit board assembly onto the DIN rail (not supplied).

Wiring:
Use the appropriate wiring diagram from pages 8-11 that coincides with your system
configuration.

4
NOTE:
1. MTAP2 Voltage Input should be connected
upstream of the contactor and below the
motor branch circuit fuses or circuit
breaker.
2. CT orientation: point arrow towards load.

Current Transformer (CT) Notes

The MTAP2 current input terminal strip accepts a 0-3VAC RMS signal to represent
current. CT’s supplied by PdMA have the appropriate burden resistor to work with the
PdMA tester.
For safety considerations, a CT must never be open-circuited while in operation.
Donut style and split-core style CT’s supplied by PdMA have built-in burden resistors
that are encapsulated, thus preventing an accidental open circuit.
If the CT’s you are using have burden resistors connected to external terminals, then
take appropriate steps to minimize the possibility of an accidental open-circuit.
When installing any CT’s, be aware that CT accuracy can be affected by nearby
magnetic fields. Mount the CT’s to minimize interference from nearby devices
containing coils, such as contactors, relays, and transformers.
