Location and name

Hoi An is an ancient town down the Thu Bon


River, on the coastal plain of Quang Nam
Province, for about 30 km south of Da Nang City.
Hoi An used to be known as the international
market with many different names such as Lam
Ap, Faifo, Hoai Pho and Hoi An is the most
common one now.
Peaceful and ancient, Hoi An is one of the most
popular tourist destinations in central Vietnam.
General introduction

In 1999, Hoi An was officially recognized by


UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Since then, it
has become a destination that attracts a large
number of domestic and foreign tourists to visit.

- In the 17th and 18th centuries, Hoi An Ancient Town
was one of the busiest trading centers in the country.

- During the two fierce resistance wars of the nation


against the French colonialists and the invading
American empire, this place was fortunate not to be
ravaged by the war.

- The 20th century did not suffer much from the


urbanization process.

- Since 1980, scholars as well as domestic and foreign


tourists have paid attention to the beauty of
architecture and culture in Hoi An Ancient Town,
gradually, this place has become an attractive tourist
destination in Hoi An. our country.

Old town
The old quarter of Minh An ward most clearly shows the
characteristics of Hoi An ancient town architecture. The
map of Hoi An ancient town consists of short and
narrow streets, intersecting in the shape of a
checkerboard with Tran Phu Street being the main road.
The roads in Hoi An seem to be covered with a layer of
moss, fanciful and poetic like a vivid picture, especially at
night. The historical sites also contribute to complete the
architectural picture of Hoi An ancient town. Visitors can
not ignore historical sites such as Bridge Pagoda, Ong
Temple, Tan Ky ancient house…

Referring to the architecture in Hoi An ancient town, it
is impossible not to mention the traditional houses. The
most popular are typical one or two-story houses,
narrow in width, very long in depth, creating a tubular
house type.
