Qla Consider a solid cylinder of radius r = b and height z = c. The
06 L3 CO1
boundary surface at r = b is subjected to a uniform heating
electrically at a rate of qo W/m2, the boundary surface at z = o is
insulated. The boundary surface at z c dissipates heat by
=

convection into an ambient at zero temperature with a heat transfer

coefficient h. Write the mathematical formulation of this heat
conduction problem.
b An electrical resistance of mattress type is inserted between two
09 L4 CO1
slabs of different materials on a panel heater. On one side, the
material has a thermal conductivity of 0.174 W/m K and 10 mm
thick. On the other side of the heater the material has a thermal
conductivity of 0.05 W/m K and 25 mm thick. The convection heat
transfer coefficients for the thinner and thicker slabs are 23.26 and
11.63 W/m2K. The temperature of the surrounding air on both
sides is 15 °C. If the energy dissipation for each square meter of the
mattress is 5 kW, neglecting end effects, find i) the surface
temperature of the slab ii) the temperature of the mattress
assuming it to be the same as the inner surface of the slabs
Q2 a Discuss the importance of critical thickness of insulation from the 06 L2 COO1
heat transfer point of view with suitable examples.
b Calculate the rate, at which heat is being lost to the surroundings, 09 L4 CO1
per unit length of a steam pipe (k 80.2 w/m K) of ID 3 cm and OOD
3.4 cm. The convective heat transter coetficients on inner and outer
surfaces are 20 W/m2 K each. There is a radiation heat transfer
coefficient of 5 W/m2 K on the outer surface in addition. The
temperature of steam is 150 °C and outside air temperature is 25
C.
Q3a A wire 150 mm long and 0.5 mm in diameter is taut between two 06 L3 CO1
conducting supports in a water tank and is submerged. A controlled
amount of current through a variac is passed through the wire until
the water boils at 100 °c. Find the steady sate temperature of the
wire if 25 watts of electric power is consumed. Take h = 6000 W/m2
C
