This science fiction film by Steven Spielberg shows the life of having
advanced technology that is beyond what we have today. It showcases a human
child robot or “mecha” who was created using a neuron-sequencing technology (as
per movie) which gave him the ability to love and show affection to humans. Indeed,
it is truly a masterpiece which I think is thought-provoking if the concept of
mecha-robot (human robot) with artificial intelligence and its relationship with
humanity is possible in the future of our real world. It is given that in the present
time, our generation has modern and innovative technology, and humanoids or
robots that closely resemble humans actually already exist today. However, our
technology still has its limitations because these robots can only do many tasks for
humans or do movements similar to humans but they are not yet capable of having
feelings like human emotions, thoughts and even consciousness– simply they just
make human tasks easier without emotional association.
I always believe that science never stops and it is a continuous learning,
discovery and innovation. With this, it is not possible to have a “mecha” or robot with
AI and with the capability of replicating the full range of human emotions and
thoughts. Additionally, as I have mentioned, given that we have humanoids existing
today, with further studies and modifications as our technology continuously
advances, we can turn it into a “mecha” just like in the movie. Nevertheless, let us
also not forget that this comes with great responsibility as humans, and comes with
advantages and disadvantages.
If the concept is about having a human child robot with a capability to show
affection, this would be a great advantage and a dream come true for those people
or couples who wish to have a child but cannot actually bear one. Therefore, it
satisfies human needs. And if generally having a human robot still with a full range of
human capabilities including emotions, this could also be a help to other people and
our society. Since they potentially provide emotional support to humans in certain
situations or even help in healthcare or therapy settings. Additionally, it would
increase the ability to interact and communicate with humans leading to more
efficient and effective collaboration. Most importantly, it was highlighted in the movie
that this innovation could help save the current situation of the earth since these
robots don’t consume any resources such as foods, water or anything else that a
human needs to live.
Along with these advantages are the potential consequences or
disadvantages in pursuing this technological advancement. The development or the
making of these robots itself is already costly and time-consuming, as well as its
maintenance. Additionally, in the side of the robots they could be prone to abuse,
potential exploitation or mistreatments from the humans. While for the side of
humans, there are also possibilities for these robots with emotions to malfunction or
be hacked which may lead to unpredictable or dangerous behavior that can harm
humans.
On top of everything stated, the idea of having these “mecha” or human
robots with emotions in the future needs a lot of deep thinking, brainstorming,
research and development before applying in the real world. This is to ensure that
advantages and disadvantages are carefully considered and balanced for the benefit
of humans, robots and of society as a whole.
