Optimization Written Homework

This document contains instructions and 5 optimization problems for a Calculus I homework assignment. Students are asked to solve each problem by finding dimensions, measurements or times that minimize/maximize a given value such as surface area, volume, or distance between objects. The problems include finding dimensions of a box with minimal surface area for a given volume, maximum volume of a box for a given surface area, time two boats are closest together, interior angles that maximize a trapezoid area, and dimensions of a cylinder inscribed in a sphere to maximize its volume.

Calculus I - Written Homework

Optimization

Instructions: Solve each of the problems below on a separate piece of paper. Present
your solutions clearly and show all of your work.

Problem 1
Find the dimensions of a box with a square base with a volume of 12 cubic inches and
minimal surface area.

Problem 2
Find is the maximum volume of a box that has a square base and a surface area of 20
square centimeters.

Problem 3
A boat leaves a dock at 2:00 PM and travels due south at a speed of 20 km/h. Another
boat has been heading due east at 10 km/h and reaches the same dock at 3:00 PM. At
what time are the two boats closest together?

Problem 4
Find the measures of the interior angles that maximize the area of an isosceles trapezoid
where the length of the non-parallel sides are each 4 inches and the length the shorter of
the two bases is 6 inches.

Problem 5
A right cylinder is inscribed in a sphere of fixed radius R. Let r represent the radius of
the cylinder and let h represent the cylinder’s height. Determine the dimensions of the
cylinder that maximize its volume.
